Why Attend A Career Fair?

Two words; free pens. I can’t say I knew what to expect for my first career fair experience but it turned out there are no clowns and there are instead oodles of free pens.

I’ve been to a few fairs in my younger days, but this was my first formal attendance of the Career Fair on the Fox. Unlike my childhood memories of cotton candy and merry-go-round rides, this kind of fair involved much more mature opportunities like booths with company names on them (some still have candy), company chap-stick, and brochures. However as crazy as it sounds, I realize that a job opportunity has higher value and may last longer than a bit of sticky sweet pink fluff that dissolves in your mouth.

I wasn’t fully prepared for the enormity of the event with over 140 companies lined up in booths and waiting for me to approach them and strike up my best elevator pitch with the flourish of my well-rounded resume. In fact, I wandered through the aisles a couple times just taking in all the companies’ names and representatives smiling at me with their “ask me anything,” attitudes.

The first few booths made polite chit-chat but they just didn’t seem to have a position that I found desirable considering my Journalism Major. Reaching the homestretch of the final row of booths in the field house, I was drawn to the 4imprint company which posted openings for a graphic design position. I’m not a full fledged designing genius but I know how to work some of the newer graphic programs so I shyly smiled at Lia Cummings and we struck up a conversation about 4imprint and the potential career opportunities I may want to consider. I left with her business card, but the true gift had been the amount of information I had compiled today.

I also had a professional picture taken for free, which I can use for business cards and networking. The fair offered resume reviews and great interviewing experience. My reaction to this wonderful opportunity is that it really helped me practice and get comfortable with connecting to potential employers as well as learn about how to market myself and create positive and lasting  impressions.

Federal Internships

The webinar “Go Government: Landing your Dream Internship” took place on Feb. 8, 2012. The facilitator was career adviser Cassie Curry from Career Services. There were a decent number of attendees for an auditory webinar.

The two panel members, Chris Hogan and Jessica Wahl, were featured. Chris works for Homeland Security and Jessica works for the Department of the Interior. They talked about a variety of topics including how there are many different opportunities within federal jobs. Websites where you can go to find federal internships are USA.gov, makingthedifference.org and usajobs.gov.

There are also many third party internship providers such as agency websites, career development centers, career fairs, social media and personal networks.

Some facts about federal jobs are that they offer excellent pay and benefits, high levels of responsibility, valuable work experience, flexible schedules, training and professional development and great travel opportunities.

The panelists talked about the different bureaus and how there are internships for every major. Jessica said that the breadth of experience you get is great. Chris added that you get unique opportunities.

Some advice the panelists gave was to tailor your resume by using the job announcement, expand your experiences and make a master resume. Something interesting they mentioned was that federal agencies prefer if you wait until they contact you with a job opportunity rather than you contact them because they get many applications.

Creating Connections Recap

Creating Connections was held on April 25 in the Reeve Memorial Union Ballroom. It was from 5:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m., but many people stayed for a while after that. The event was hosted by Career Services in partnership with the Student Organization of Latinos (SOL).

This event was a total success. Being part of the behind-the-scenes action, I had many expectations for this event. With all the planning and marketing we had done, I was hoping for the best. In preparation for the event, the Career Services marketing team worked to spread the word all throughout campus, and reached out to many organizations such as the Asian Student Association, Hmong Student Union and the LGBTQ Resource Center.

As the event was beginning, I began to get nervous. I knew that we had done all we could to market the event successful, but attendance worried me. Everything else was in place; all that was left was for students to arrive. As the time got closer to the beginning of the event, my nerves kept rising. Then all of a sudden students started showing up and things were under way. Before the event began, I got the opportunity to mingle and I got the chance to meet Amanda Betts, one of the alumni speakers.

The alumni panel was new this year at Creating Connections. We had four wonderful alumni speakers: Adria Maddaleni, Amanda Betts, Jacob Griesbach and Jes Berndt. Prior to the event as I was speaking to Amanda, I learned a lot about her. It was pretty awesome because she was journalism major and Spanish minor just like me, so I thought that was really cool. All four alumni shared stories of their time here at UW Oshkosh, of their networking experiences and of where they are now.

After the alumni speakers, employers and students got the chance to network. There were two sessions with two different questions, one for each round. The first one was: what would you do with a million dollars? This question was a good question to start off with because it eased the tension and started conversations between students and employers. The second round was open networking where students could talk to employers of their choice and had the chance to enjoy refreshments. During the open networking round, I saw the room filled with students and employers and they all looked happy and seemed to be enjoying their selves. That made me very happy.

At the end of the day, Creating Connections was a total success. My nerves eventually calmed down as I saw that the room began to get filled with students. Everyone seemed to be having a good time and employers looked happy to be there. I felt all the hard work that we all put in paid off. I had a wonderful time at the 2nd annual Creating Connections: Empowered through Networking event.

 

Creating Connections Empowered through Networking

Creating Connections Empowered through Networking is a career event that will be hosted this spring for its second year on Wednesday, April 25. It is an event that is directed to students of color, women and LGBTQ students. The directive is aimed at them mainly because those groups are underrepresented in management positions. Employers who will be present are directly seeking these kinds of students. However, don’t get discouraged if you don’t fit into those categories. The event is open to everyone and I encourage everyone to come.

This event will be held in Reeve Memorial Union Ballroom 227. It will go from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. and will be split up into two sessions; one going from 5:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m., and the other from 6:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. If you should choose so, you may stay for the duration of both sessions. I know I am!

This is event is formal yet relaxed, allowing students to explore opportunities and build relationships with employers, so dress business casual. If building meaningful relationships with employers doesn’t allure you, I am sure the next thing will. We will have delicious free food for participants. It doesn’t end there, we also have door prizes! Two lucky winners will receive a $100 Reeve gift card each.

After reading all of that, I am sure you can’t wait for April 25th to get to the event. Well I am with you! I wish it was April 25th as well, but there are still some things to do first. First off, you have to register for the event on Titan Jobs. You can register for one or both time slots.

Second, make sure that you update your profile on Titan Jobs and upload your resume if you have one. After doing that, if you feel like you are nervous and don’t know what you will say to an employer, have no worries. We have an event that will serve kind of like a practice run for you, and it will be held just one week before the event.

Social Media and Your Job Search

Since the dawn of social media, employers have been searching for online information on possible job candidates. With people updating their profiles every day, scouring social media sites is a great way to conduct general background checks. Some companies even go so far as to ask for your login information during the interview. Are you prepared to bare it all?

E. Chandlee Bryan, a career coach and co-author of the book “The Twitter Job Search Guide,” said job seekers should always be aware of what’s on their social media sites and assume someone is going to look at it. According to Professional Resume Services, these are not the days of three traditional references anymore. Nowadays, your three references are Facebook, Twitter and LinkedIn. It’s obvious that everything you post online will be seen by someone, so the key is to conduct yourself professionally online as you would in real life.

People have been fired and not hired because of distasteful comments or photos. But here’s how you can prevent or improve your online reputation. First, survey the damage. Google yourself and see what sort of content shows up on the first five pages. Anything troubling? Mark it for action. Then sign up for the alerts available at spots like Google Alerts; when information about you is added or updated, you’ll find out via email.

Because all published content on the Internet is archived on Internet Archive, a nonprofit initiative designed to be a resource for historians and researchers, completely deleting something is almost impossible. That’s why you bury the bad with the good. Create new content such as a blog or personal website that highlights your skills and positive attributes. Have your work published with different credible sites. These actions don’t make the bad stuff go away, but it will show employers that you are serious about portraying yourself professionally.

If you don’t have a LinkedIn profile already, create one. If you are on LinkedIn, strengthen your profile by filling out all fields. LinkedIn is one of the top sites that pop up when a name is entered into Google, so make it the first thing an employer sees. People are searching for you, make sure you paint the picture of yourself that you want them to see.

 

Does major = career?

A common experience for seniors in college is the anticipation of graduation. In addition to the excitement that most near-grads feel, many are equally overwhelmed with anxiety and uncertainty regarding what the future holds for them. For some students, they have a very good picture of what they would like their future to look like. Other students might have a general idea of the field they would like to pursue, but are not sure what their dream job is, or how to get there. Listen up, uncertain students; this blog post is for you!

Fear not! I am here to tell you that your options can be limitless! This year, Career Services is working to integrate a campaign entitled, “Does Major = Career?” The purpose of the project is to teach students that their undergraduate major does not necessarily have to equal their future career. The idea originally surfaced at one of our staff meetings with the intention of helping students realize that they have options within their area of study. Our hope is to teach students that by developing their transferable skills and taking advantage of internship experiences, they can broaden the career fields available to them in the future.

Even within the Career Services office, our staff comes from a variety of academic backgrounds and undergraduate majors including Psychology, Human Services, Communications, Human Resources, Kinesiology, and Radio-TV-Film to name a few. What draw all of us to Career Services are the transferable skills that we naturally possess and have worked to develop through work experiences, internships, and higher education.

So what does this mean for students? You might be reading this and thinking, “What if I want my major to equal my career?” This is great news! For some students, their major really does equal their career, which means their career path is a little more defined and direct. For students whose career paths are less direct, they need to be sure of their skills and experience and be able to articulate and sell them to employers. The sooner students start thinking about these things, the more time they have to develop their skills and seek beneficial internships before graduation.
