UWO Human Resource graduates give advice via webinar

When you hear HR Webinar what probably comes to your mind is an exclusive event for human resources majors. Well let me start by telling you that you are completely wrong. This webinar was useful to any major or person. This webinar was basically structured as question and answer. I was the only live audience member so that was a pretty cool experience. I got to meet the two gentlemen after the webinar and they were both very nice.

The two employers who participated in the webinar were Andrew Ingebrigtson and Carlos Rodriguez. They were asked questions from many different aspects of the work field. The first question they were asked was what challenges they face when trying to hire applicants. Carlos said a problem he faces is that applicants limit themselves. Andrew stated that what he struggles with is qualifications, especially in his field where there is a skills shortage in engineering.

Next they gave advice on cross-transitioning. Carlos said moving from one job to another can help you develop skills not already in your expertise. A word of advice from Carlos was to stay positive with your previous employer. Andrew agreed with Carlos and added that you should be willing to volunteer for experience or go back to school for the skills you need. He also said that you should show your skills, especially things that might not be conveyed in your resume. When going from industry to industry, Carlos said to show your new employer that you have the skills necessary for that new position, and to sell yourself not your title. He also mentioned that a great thing to have is references.

The next topic was interviewing. Here are some tips that Carlos and Andrew gave:

  • Maintain good eye contact
  • Have a good pitch
  • Show your self-confidence
  • Be prepared and comfortable speaking about yourself
  • Sell yourself

They also talked about appropriate attire for an interview. A great piece of advice Andrew gave was to research the company and dress to what is expected for that position. Some people wonder what to bring to an interview. Carlos said that a resume and questions tend to be enough. A portfolio or project you have done that shows your skills for that position is more appropriate in a second interview. Andrew said it never hurts to ask what they would like you to bring beforehand.

 

Creating Connections Recap

Creating Connections was held on April 25 in the Reeve Memorial Union Ballroom. It was from 5:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m., but many people stayed for a while after that. The event was hosted by Career Services in partnership with the Student Organization of Latinos (SOL).

This event was a total success. Being part of the behind-the-scenes action, I had many expectations for this event. With all the planning and marketing we had done, I was hoping for the best. In preparation for the event, the Career Services marketing team worked to spread the word all throughout campus, and reached out to many organizations such as the Asian Student Association, Hmong Student Union and the LGBTQ Resource Center.

As the event was beginning, I began to get nervous. I knew that we had done all we could to market the event successful, but attendance worried me. Everything else was in place; all that was left was for students to arrive. As the time got closer to the beginning of the event, my nerves kept rising. Then all of a sudden students started showing up and things were under way. Before the event began, I got the opportunity to mingle and I got the chance to meet Amanda Betts, one of the alumni speakers.

The alumni panel was new this year at Creating Connections. We had four wonderful alumni speakers: Adria Maddaleni, Amanda Betts, Jacob Griesbach and Jes Berndt. Prior to the event as I was speaking to Amanda, I learned a lot about her. It was pretty awesome because she was journalism major and Spanish minor just like me, so I thought that was really cool. All four alumni shared stories of their time here at UW Oshkosh, of their networking experiences and of where they are now.

After the alumni speakers, employers and students got the chance to network. There were two sessions with two different questions, one for each round. The first one was: what would you do with a million dollars? This question was a good question to start off with because it eased the tension and started conversations between students and employers. The second round was open networking where students could talk to employers of their choice and had the chance to enjoy refreshments. During the open networking round, I saw the room filled with students and employers and they all looked happy and seemed to be enjoying their selves. That made me very happy.

At the end of the day, Creating Connections was a total success. My nerves eventually calmed down as I saw that the room began to get filled with students. Everyone seemed to be having a good time and employers looked happy to be there. I felt all the hard work that we all put in paid off. I had a wonderful time at the 2nd annual Creating Connections: Empowered through Networking event.

 

Brewers Career Fair at Miller Park

On Monday, April 23, career adviser Erin Rammer and I attended the Brewers Career Fair at Miller Park. Both Erin and I are big Brewers fans and when we saw the opportunity to combine our love of baseball, Brewers and helping students make connections in the sports industry, we had to make the trip!

Erin and I arrived at Miller Park at 4:00 p.m., and to our surprise there were many candidates looking to make connections with the representatives from the organizations in attendance. Both Erin and I are career fair pros and were pretty amazed that there were waits up to half an hour to speak to some of the representatives. We are used to seeing a line of 3 or 4 to talk to a representative, but when you see a line of 40 or 50 it can be pretty overwhelming.

Not to be intimidated, Erin and I talked to representatives from the Chicago Rush, Chicago Sky, Milwaukee Wave, ESPN Radio 540/1510, Wisconsin State Golf Association, Milwaukee Admirals, and Milwaukee Brewers. The few groups that we didn’t get a chance to talk to were the Wisconsin Timber Rattlers (where we have established connections already) and the Milwaukee Bucks. Also in attendance were a couple of graduate programs from the Milwaukee area promoting their sports management programs.

It is our hope that by making these connections students at UW Oshkosh interested in breaking into the sports industry will have the opportunity to see internships and other positions posted in Titan Jobs. Also, we hope to help students make connections with the various representatives associated with these organizations.

As a result of this trip, I’ve already made a great connection at ESPN Deportes 1510 that is interested in students that want a radio experience and have Spanish speaking skills.

While this trip was a combination of work and play, Erin and I felt it was successful on both hands. We made some great professional connections that may pay off for UW Oshkosh students in the future!

On a fun note, after the career fair we were able to watch Brewers batting practice where I walked away with a practice ball that was tossed into the stands by third-base coach Ed Sedar. And during the third inning both Erin and I were featured on the jumbotron in the US Cellular fan photo of the day with the player cutout John Axford. We won his t-shirt. Erin was gracious enough to let me take the t-shirt home! Thanks Erin!

Creating Connections Empowered through Networking

Creating Connections Empowered through Networking is a career event that will be hosted this spring for its second year on Wednesday, April 25. It is an event that is directed to students of color, women and LGBTQ students. The directive is aimed at them mainly because those groups are underrepresented in management positions. Employers who will be present are directly seeking these kinds of students. However, don’t get discouraged if you don’t fit into those categories. The event is open to everyone and I encourage everyone to come.

This event will be held in Reeve Memorial Union Ballroom 227. It will go from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. and will be split up into two sessions; one going from 5:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m., and the other from 6:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. If you should choose so, you may stay for the duration of both sessions. I know I am!

This is event is formal yet relaxed, allowing students to explore opportunities and build relationships with employers, so dress business casual. If building meaningful relationships with employers doesn’t allure you, I am sure the next thing will. We will have delicious free food for participants. It doesn’t end there, we also have door prizes! Two lucky winners will receive a $100 Reeve gift card each.

After reading all of that, I am sure you can’t wait for April 25th to get to the event. Well I am with you! I wish it was April 25th as well, but there are still some things to do first. First off, you have to register for the event on Titan Jobs. You can register for one or both time slots.

Second, make sure that you update your profile on Titan Jobs and upload your resume if you have one. After doing that, if you feel like you are nervous and don’t know what you will say to an employer, have no worries. We have an event that will serve kind of like a practice run for you, and it will be held just one week before the event.

Forward: A Civil Discussion on Wisconsin’s Present and Future

As part of a new interdisciplinary initiative of the American Democracy Project, a discussion will be held on Wednesday, April 4, from 7:00-8:30 p.m. in Reeve 227.

The plan is to spend most of the time listening to each other as participants discuss three questions:
-How does my life/my major/my work intersect with state policies and state politics?
-What is my impression about the state of the state and its people?
-What can I do to engage with others and make a positive difference in the state?
People will sit at round tables with about six or seven others, including a student facilitator and a faculty/staff facilitator. There will be a chance to share ideas and thoughts with the broader group as well. Volunteer groups and community members are encouraged to join.
The event is envisioned as a way to get people from multiple disciplines and colleges learning more about how politics intersect with what we all do, and how what we all do intersect with politics, in a nonpartisan and civil way.

Career Path Series: Jessica King

Career Services presents Jessica King, a University of Wisconsin Oshkosh alumna and current Wisconsin State Senator. Sen. King, a native of Fond du Lac, received her undergraduate degree from UWO with majors in International Studies, History, and Political Science.

King was very involved on campus as she was the president of five different organizations including Phi Mu Fraternity and the Oshkosh Student Association. Later, King went on to study law at Thomas Jefferson School of Law where she received her degree along with a Certificate in Global Legal Studies.

In 2004, King returned to Oshkosh as an associate attorney as well as an adjunct professor at UWO.  On April 10, King will again revisit her alma mater to share her life experiences that shaped her career. She will also discuss the importance of involvement and the strength to take career chances. Please join us in welcoming her back to campus with our Career Path Series on April 10 from 6:00-8:00 p.m. in Sage Hall room 1214.

Do your palms sweat and your heart race when you think about that next job interview? Preparing for an interview can be a nerve-wracking experience. Fortunately, Career Services is here to help. Let’s begin with some basic interview tips given by New Grad Life blog. Once you’ve got these tips down, then you can put them into real-life use with our office-held mock interviews and even virtual interviewing! Career Services is here to help you, a UW Oshkosh student or alumni, rock that next job interview.

5 Crazy Job Interview Tips That Work From NewGradLife.BlogSpot.com

While these may seem like strange, pre-interview routines, they actually do work and will help you to land the job of your dreams:

1.) Look at Facebook

This is actually two strategies in one. First of all, check your Facebook profile out and make sure that your own profile is set to private and there are no embarrassing photos of you tagged on the site. If there are, untag yourself from those photos and ask your friends if they would please refrain from tagging you. If possible, get the photos taken down. Double check as well that status updates you’ve posted aren’t embarrassing. If they are, delete them.

While this won’t completely remove the record of those photos, it does make it harder to find. That in turn means if you ace the interview, your interviewer is less likely to find embarrassing material online which will make them think twice about calling you back for a second interview.

The second half of this technique is to find out the name of the person who will be interviewing you and look up their Facebook profile. Get as much information as you can about the person since this will be helpful to you to throw into the conversation when you are meeting with them. Showing an interest in something the person is interested in is a sure way to get yourself remembered out of the hundreds of interviews the hiring manager has to conduct.

2.) Prepare a folder to fiddle with

Yeah, it sounds strange, but this is a great pre-interview technique that can come in handy. Often, you will be asked to wait for a few minutes before your interview. Most times, it’s just because the person interviewing you is busy or wants to make you feel as if you aren’t the most important person for them to meet. However, on occasion, this is actually a test. They will secretly observe you to see what you do when you are waiting to be interviewed. If you have a folder with your papers in it, you can spend the time appearing to organize yourself so you ace that test.

3.) Put water behind your ears and on your wrists

This is actually something to do just before the interview. Duck into the bathroom and dab a few drops of water behind the ears and on your wrists. These are areas where you have major arteries and some experts claim by putting water in those locations you can help to calm your nerves by cooling down quickly.

4.) Write a list

This one is actually not such a strange pre-interview routine, but it does work wonders. You’ll inevitably be asked to tell the interviewer about your proudest achievements, your best qualities and your worst qualities. Most people just wing it when they walk into the interview. However, since you know these things are likely to come up, pre-empt them by making yourself a list of things you can answer. Just make sure to pause for a moment when answering so it appears natural and not rehearsed. Speaking of that…

5. ) Rehearse in front of a mirror

While a common pre-interview routine is to rehearse by having a friend or family member go through a mock interview with you, a strange pre-interview technique which actually does work wonders is to rehearse on your own in front of a mirror. Your face will often speak louder than your words, so you want to take the time to make sure when you answer questions, you don’t telegraph you aren’t comfortable answering those questions. By rehearsing in front of a mirror, you can avoid that problem completely.

On-campus Mock Interviews

With mock interviews, students are able to meet with actual employers to conduct a fake interview. Although the position the student is applying for isn’t real, the practice and experience is. And who knows, if an employer really likes a mock candidate, that person may be called upon for a real interview! After the mock interview, employers give each student feedback such as what they did well and what can be improved.

Career Services offers general mock interviews and major-specific mock interviews. Employers are carefully picked to match the students’ potential pool of employers in real life. Ultimately, mock interviews are a win-win for students and employers. The students get the experience of interviewing while employers get to meet potential employees.

Students are encouraged to attend one of the Boost Your Interviewing Techniques workshops prior to participation in mock interviews. Also, professional dress is recommended and preferred, but appropriate dress is required. This basically means no t-shirts or ripped jeans. Treat your mock interview like you would a real interview. Students can register for mock interviews in Titan Jobs.

Tables of Titans

Tables of Titans invites students to meet and have dinner with a variety of UW Oshkosh alums. This event provides a unique opportunity for students to network with alumni while exploring future career options in an intimate, friendly, and welcoming environment. The employer will cover lunch/dinner costs. Each event has a capacity of eight students each, so sign up quickly! Please be advised, that you are expected to attend if you RSVP. I am the Human Resources Representative for Cintas at the Greenville WI location and have been in  this role for the past 3 ½ years. Daily tasks and responsibilities that I oversee in the HR position are; recruiting, hiring,  benefits, payroll, training and development and fun team building activities.  As being the location’s Health and Safety coordinator, I manage all OSHA recordkeeping, implement new safety ideas, create awareness for a safe working environment and audit all training documents. Before starting at Cintas, I had two internships throughout my college career. I was the Sports Events Management Intern at Special Olympics in Appleton and an Office Manager/HR Generalist for a Regional Vice President for Primerica Financial Services.

UWO marketing major shares his Dining with Professionals experience

On Tuesday, Feb. 21, the University of Wisconsin Oshkosh Career Services held its first Dining with Professionals event of the semester. The event allows students to learn the basic fundamentals of networking, dinner conversations and proper dining etiquette. A fashion show is often held to explain what are appropriate clothing selections for different events. The next Dining with Professionals event will be April 18 and held at La Sure’s Banquet Hall. Last semester, UWO student and marketing major Brian O’Connell attended the Dining with Professionals dinner. This was his experience:

“Prior to the Dinning with professionals, I had a phone interview the same day for an internship.  It went well and I was excited because the employer wanted a second interview. On the way to the event later that night, I was talking to my friend about how my interview went great and. We arrived and went to our assigned groups to talk with employers. Low and behold, the second employer to come talk to my group was the person that interviewed me earlier that day. How crazy!?”

“I was quite surprised and immediately thought to myself, this dinner is going to mean much more than just satisfying the requirement for my class. I thought it would be best that since they just met me I should probably sit at their table to get to know them and provide a good first impression. Long story short, the dinner went well. We chatted a little bit and both expressed our excitement to see each other the following week for my second interview. The moral of this story is to show the importance and benefits of not only networking, but the events that UWO offers to us students. Take advantage of these events!!!”
