Post Graduation Budgeting

College can be difficult, yet a fun time of learning more about yourself, your desired career field and just life in general. Although you might have been working your way through college and paying for most of your expenses, finances change dramatically after college. Even though the word “budgeting” sounds tedious and only something parents do, developing a budget is very important when arranging your personal finances. Budgeting doesn’t have to involve a list of everything you keeping a shoe box full of receipts or keeping track of every coffee you buy. Budgeting just means being aware and mindful of your income and where and how you plan to spend that money. Once you start earning a constant salary and are responsible for all of your bills, try to lay out everything you have to pay before the end of the month so you get a visual of where your money will be heading

To start an easy budgeting routine, set aside five to ten minutes to plan out each month’s spending requirements: How much will rent be? How much is your monthly student loan bill? How much do you spend on going out with friends? How much will you spend on groceries? Cable? Netflix Transportation? Phone service? Movies? Haircuts? Car insurance? Electricity?

You get the picture. All of this adds up. After adding up all of these expenses, it’s time to compare this amount to your salary. Can you afford to have and do all of these things? Can you drink coffee at home instead of getting Starbucks every morning? Will you crumble into pieces if you can’t watch another episode of House of Cards on Netflix? After several months of keeping track of what you’re spending your hard earned cash on, you’ll start to become more aware of the difference between a need and a want and it will eventually become easier for you to monitor your spending habits.

Analyzing a Job Offer

Congratulations! You have just been offered the position of your dreams, but don’t forget to take some time to think about the details of the job before accepting the offer.  Learning how to analyze job offers and ultimately how to negotiate salary and benefits will help you obtain the best possible opportunity for both you and the employer. What comes to mind when you are analyzing a job offer? Salary? Hours? Healthcare benefits?  There are many different things to think about when analyzing a job offer, but this blog is going to focus on responsibilities, income, growth, happiness and teamwork. These steps of a job analysis should help you evaluate various features of the position and whether or not the job suits your lifestyle.

Step 1

Be sure to review the job description and notes from the interview to see if the job duties are compatible with your personality. If you tend to be the quiet type, you may not want to accept a job that requires you to speak in front of people all day.

Step 2

If relocation is part of the position, remember to do your research.  Before saying ‘yes’ to the relocation, consider the new location’s cost of living, what you will be leaving behind, the cost of the move, the weather, etc.

Step 3

Explore the financial benefits and expenses. Review the company’s benefits package and the cost of health insurance for yourself and possible your family. Investigate the cost of commuting, buying appropriate clothing for the position, social activity costs and other things that will cost you money.

Step 4

Meet or connect with the people you will be working with, team members and your potential supervisors. Check out if your personalities will mesh together when working side by side. Imagine working under your supervisor and taking orders from him/her.

So remember, when you receive a job offer, it’s important to take the time to carefully evaluate the offer so you are making an educated decision to accept, or to reject, the offer. The last thing you want to do is to make a hasty decision that you will regret later on.

Also, as a new grad be sure to have a good understanding that you may have fewer opportunities to negotiate due your amount experience. As you gain professional experience and can demonstrate a positive work performance,  your abilities to negotiate salary and other portions of a job offer will increase.

How a UWO Grad Turned His Love of Sports Into a Career

Can’t run a 40-yard dash under 5 seconds or throw a 95-mile an hour a fastball, but still want a career in sports? There is still hope.  Find out what a recent grad of UWO did to reach goal of working in sports.

Wade Vincent graduated from the University of Wisconsin- Oshkosh in 2012 with a Communication degree.  Wade began his career in sports journey by interning with the Intramural Sports Department at UWO.  The Intramural Sports program provides an opportunity for participation in sports in an organized, competitive environment for students, faculty and staff.

To further his experience in the sports  industry, Wade received an internship with the Madison Mallards after graduation. The Madison Mallards are a collegiate summer baseball team located in Madison, Wisconsin that plays in the Northwoods League. The Mallards offer internships every summer to students who are interested in working directly with team management. After gaining experience with the Mallards, Wade moved on to accept a full-time position with Lids.   Following his job with Lids, the Madison Mallards offered Wade the Corporate Service Manager position.

At the end of the day, it’s your contributions and your persistence that will help you get to where you want to be. Along with having a severe interest in sports, follow these steps to help you achieve your goal of working in the sports industry.

  1. Get an Internship. Now.
  2. Get another internship, then start thinking about getting a paid job in sports.
  3. Pick a specific sport you would prefer to work with.
  4. Check job openings frequently.
  5. Find somebody that knows somebody that can hook you up with your dream job.
  6. Join any sports network organization in your university (Intramurals) or community.
  7. Connect someone who is currently doing the job you would like to have.
  8. Be persistent and be polite.

Does Major = Career?

Choosing a major can be one of the hardest decisions a young professional can make in their life. It is essentially the decision that will decide his/her career, right? Not necessarily. Today we are seeing that over 80% of people in today’s workforce are in career fields unrelated to their majors. So why is this? Is it possible that we are choosing our majors for the wrong reasons? Are we changing our goals along the way? Or could it be we are not prepared to make a decision like that at the age of 18? Maybe it is all of the above and then some more.

Although there is no right answer, there are things that should be considered along the way. When thinking about choosing/changing a major, think more about what the major offers, rather than what it is! The transferable skills and professional experiences will be the reason you get the job, not the major. Below are some tips to keep in mind.

1. Picking a major does NOT limit your career options
No matter what the major is, completing an undergraduate degree helps you develop depth of a field, and encourages critical thinking. Students develop transferable skills in any major, but taking advantage of internship opportunities will help broaden your career options and professional network. There is no rule that says you have to become what you majored in, don’t limit yourself!

2. Picking a Major ≠ Picking a Career
There are a few careers that are major specific like engineering, nursing, and education. These are careers that mostly consist of registered or licensed professionals, but when you look at other majors this is not that case. Think about it! When you major in nursing, you are most likely going to be a nurse, but what about if you majored in communications? How would you even define one specific career title? You can’t, and that is because there is not one. The opportunities are huge, and the skills you gained can be utilized in a variety of different paths.

3. Pick a major based off your interests
You all know the saying, “Love what you do and you will never work a day in your life.” Although it may be cliché, it is absolutely true! When you pick a major based off your interest you will most likely be more excited and passionate about your career. Your expertise in the areas may also help you succeed.

4. Pick a major for the right reasons! Do your research
There are many aspects to think about when you choose/change a major. Whether it is financial, interest based, or what your parents want, it is important to look at each one carefully and decided what is most important to you. If you are struggling to decide, talk to an advisor as well as professionals in the field. With all the choices available, research provides you with information that may help you pick off which majors are not for you, and get you on a path to discovering what works.
5. Pick a major that fulfills your professional goals
What do you want to get out of this major? I bet you have already considered salary of a career that typically comes out of your major, but have you thought about what the major actually entails. Each major has its own guidelines and curriculum that is specific to each field. Looking into what the major offers can be a benefit for your professional goals. Below are some examples of professional goals; be sure to factor these into your decision.
o Has built in internships into the curriculum
o Research opportunities
o Has a clinical structured into the requirements
o Provides leadership opportunities
o Offers hands on learning
o Travel is an option t replace a class

Vector Marketing Student Spotlight

Are you looking for a fair, exciting, motivating, and competitive job/internship position? Vector Marketing has what you’ve been looking for. Students at UW Oshkosh have found success by working with Vector and you can too. UW Oshkosh student sales representatives ranked No. 1 for the total semester sales in the Midwestern Cutco College Bowl last October.  As a team, Vector Marketing students in Oshkosh were able to sell $26,239 in product during the semester. Vector marketing is one of the largest student recruiters in the nation. %85 of the sales reps are students. Do you have what it takes to be No. 1?

What is Vector Marketing?

Vector Marketing is the domestic sales arm of Cutco Corporation, a cutlery manufacturer. Cutco has been made in America since 1949 and is guaranteed forever.  Vector’s sales reps are guaranteed commission each time they show Cutco to a qualified customer whether they decide to buy or not. Cutco is one of the largest student recruiters in the nation.  As of 2013, Vector has more than 200 offices throughout the United States and contracts about 60,000 students each year to perform entry-level sales work. Vector representatives are independent contractors, they are able to set up their own appointments and control their work schedules.  Vector Marketing offers challenging and meaningful work opportunities in the field of sales, with no experience necessary.

Vector Marketing also has internship opportunities. Vector Marketing Development Internship Program is designed for students who want to further their leadership skills and experience.  All of Vector’s interns begin their Vector career as sales representatives.

Q. What do you do at Vector and what is your title?

A. “I build relationships with reps, managers and customers. I help reps set goals, help them achieve their dreams and help them through their challenges and adversities. Then I set up personal one-on-one appointments with friends/customers, answer questions and help place orders. I have multiple titles. During the school year, I am a Lead Assistant Manager and Field Sales Manager. During the summer I am a Branch Manager.”

Q. What is your favorite part about working for Vector?

A. “Setting my own hours, building relationships, the work environment, the opportunities, pay and the love you get.”

Q. Do you have some type of strategy for excelling at your job? If so, what is it?

A. “Yes, just to be confident and knowledgeable of the product and be always be there for the customer.”

A. “I have gotten out of my comfort zone and am able to communicate better. I have also learned how to run a business.”

A. “The job is so flexible. I can work when I want, but I do have office responsibilities 3 days a week.”

A. “Yes, it has taught me how to work hard and to have a p0sitive attitude.”
