What Hollywood taught me about college…

Movies offer a lot more than a couple hours of entertainment. They offer valuable life advice, especially for college students. Don’t believe me? Check out some of my all-time favorite movie quotes… complete with my personal explanation of how these offer solid advice for you in your college experience.

“’Sometimes when the crew is up against it, and the breaks are beating the boys, tell them to get out there and give it all they got.’” –Airplane!

Airplane! is a classic for comedy movie fans. Ted Stryker is unconfident in his airplane flying skills when Dr. Rumack offers him encouragement in this quote. Some college students give up when school becomes hard, but it’s important to know that you can make it through the rough days and it will get better.

“I think positive emotion trumps negative emotion every time.” –Inception

This is the simplest advice I can give you on how to be successful in college. If you’re positive, people will want to hang out with you more and you’ll gain some really good friends along the way. It will also help you overcome small set backs and rough days. Look at life as a learning experience and focus on how you become stronger when faced with challenges.

“My momma always said, ‘Life was like a box of chocolates. You never know what you’re gonna get.’” –Forrest Gump

You may enter college thinking you know exactly how you’ll spend those four years of your life, but your plans may change along the way. I entered college only thinking of being a theater student. As time went on, I became involved in dance and I picked Anthropology and Sociology for majors. Expect the unexpected while you’re in college.

“The boring stuff is the stuff I remember most.” –Up

The first few weeks of freshmen year were packed with events, so I panicked when things slowed down and I realized I had no plans one weekend. That became the weekend my friends and I established the first of many “Saturday Movie Nights.” I began looking forward to these every weekend after. Even if you don’t leave your room, the best memories can be created.

“Without sacrifice, we would have nothing.” –Fight Club

College should be an enjoyable time, but there’s more to it than just having fun. Doing well in classes is essential to graduating and getting a job. Sometimes you have to spend an evening at the library to get things done, even when the only thing you want to do is watch TV and sleep. Trust me, it’s worth the sacrifice.

Movies can sometimes define our lives in unexpected ways and can also serve as tools of inspiration and advice. Are there any movie quotes that have impacted your school life or you think should be on this list?
