Goals:
Based on goals established by the Theatre program, the goals of this course, for the student, are: To have a broad knowledge of the processes of theatrical production; To develop a commitment to the pursuit of artistic excellence and integrity.

Objective:
The objective of this class is to introduce the student to the principles of fabric dyeing, and painting for both scenery and costumes as it relates to theatrical production.  These principles will be demonstrated through projects, presentations, and practical application. In order to pass this class, the student must demonstrate proficiency in painting and dyeing.

Projects:
Six projects are required in this class.  The purpose of these projects is to introduce the student to the techniques and process of dyeing and painting for theatrical venues.  Each project is designed to challenge the student in different aspects of technique and process.  Each project will be critiqued on the day it is due by the entire class.  Class participation in the critique process is mandatory. Because many different experiences are covered in the class in a timely fashion, no late projects will be accepted.

Lecture/Demonstration:
At the beginning of each project, a lecture/demonstration will be given to familiarize the student with the purpose, demands and techniques required of a project.  It is important to realize that this time will be spent establishing the base of knowledge required to execute the project.

Project Descriptions:
A booklet of detailed project descriptions and processes will be available in the bookstore.

Project 1:  Basic Techniques of Scenic Painting  - Due: 9/27/07
This project will introduce the student to the basic materials, tools and techniques used in scene painting.

Project 2:  Basic Techniques of Fabric Dyeing  - Due: 10/16/07
This project will introduce the student to the basic techniques of fabric dyeing using a variety of dyes including: Union dyes, Fiber Reactive Dyes and Direct Dyes.

Project 3:  Scenic Painting: Realistic Textures and Types  - Due:  10/30/07
This project will introduce the student to techniques used in wood, marble, and metal replication for the stage.

Project 4:  Fabric: Discharge and Resist Dyeing  - Due: 11/13/07    
This project will introduce the student to the basic techniques of fabric dyeing using color removal products and resists. Techniques include: Stripping and lightening fabric color , in addition to using resists to create Shibori and Batik patterns.

Project 5:  Scenic Painting: Traditional Backdrops  - Due: 12/13/07
This project will take students through the step by step process of painting a traditional backdrop.

Project 6:  Fabric:  Painting Techniques  - Due: 12/13/07
This project will introduce the student to the techniques used in painting and printing on fabric. Techniques include: Direct Painting, and Block Printing.

Materials:
Brushes, scenic paint, dye, fabric and safety materials will be provided for the student. Student should come to class in appropriate attire for painting and dyeing. Paint clothing is needed by September 20th.  Substantial shoes (sneakers or boots - no sandals or heels) should be worn when working in either the scenic or costume area.

Attendance:
Attendance will be taken. Two unexcused class absences will not affect the grade, however, unexcused absences in excess of two will decrease the overall class grade by 2 points for each absence thereafter.  Because it is important to keep up with the time schedule allotted, no late projects will be accepted without documentation in accordance with the Dean of Students policy on absences.
