Alumni in the News |

Thanks to all the alumni who replied to our request for information for this new section of our website. We've set up two ways of sorting people -- by name and by graduation year. Our alumni represent a wide variety of careers and that's a wonderful and encouraging thing for current students to see. Any time you plan to be back in our area, please let me know. We continue to have a very active Psi Chi/Psychology Club group and they're always eager to talk to alumni who have graduated from our program into the "real world". When many of you graduated from our program, you commented on the need for internships. You'll be happy to know that there is now a way for students to earn 3 credits toward the Psychology major by doing a 140 hour internship. Many of our students are opting to do this. If you have any connections that might enable current students to obtain an internship, please let me know. Most of the students do not expect to be paid though of course if they were, they wouldn't object! In terms of news from the department, Dr. McFadden has ended her term as department chair and I have stepped into that role. On behalf of the department, I would like to thank her for all the hard work and time she spent moving our department forward over the past six years (including both the program review and the department retreat). Hers are very big shoes to fill and I hope to be able to keep up the pace (luckily her office is right next to mine). She is taking a well-deserved sabbatical starting in Fall 2007 to focus on her research projects related to aging and especially Alzheimer's Disease, although she will still be in the area so we’ll get to see her periodically. Dr. Rauscher is back from sabbatical and finishing her book on music and cognition and editing another book while teaching several courses. We’re very happy that a third I/O Psychologist, Dr. Gary Burns, has joined Dr. Adams and Dr. Subramony this year. You can learn more about him in the faculty section of the website. In addition, we have completed two successful searches this year and will be joined in fall of 2007 by Dr. Phan Hong, a clinical psychologist, and Dr. Anca Miron, a social psychologist. Dr. Perlman had been our only clinician and as you might recall, most undergraduates think they want to do something in the clinical area, so he and Dr. Hong will have their hands full. Dr. Miron will teach our research methods class (formerly known as Experimental Psychology). We are looking forward to having two new colleagues and expanding the educational and research opportunities for psychology majors. Mrs. Stetter retired at the end of the 2006 spring semester, but she is still active in organizing the cross-cultural trips to Belize and Brazil and is considering expanding these types of opportunities for students to include trips to Costa Rica and Kenya. You can see pictures from the trips on other pages of the department website. Dr. Lishner continues to teach our Elementary Psychological Statistics and Social Psychology courses and has put together an active research program that is attracting both undergraduate and graduate students. I continue to do behavioral neuroscience research on appetite and teach Biopsychology, Psychopharmacology, and Sports Psychology. We have also expanded the physiological research to human physiology data and several students are exploring these opportunities. Dr. Vreven teaches a (still) wildly popular course on Intermediate Psychological Statistics. It’s great to see that students are clamoring to take this class. She also teaches Cognitive Psychology and "S& P". Again, I thank everyone who replied to our request for information. We will update the list once a year. I wish you all the best – you continue to be wonderful ambassadors for the work we do in Oshkosh! Jim Koch (Chair, Psychology Department)
