Why Study Political
Politics and government touches every aspect of our lives. Government policy has touched the milk and cereal we eat for breakfast, the transportation we use to go to school and work, and the pillows that we rest our heads on at night. Government policy affects our public safety, the quality of air we breath and water we drink, and the amount of money taken from our paychecks.
Political Science analyzes the various components of the political world and political outcomes. It seeks to understand relationships between governments, voters, and interest groups. If you are the kind of person who wants to know more about why governments do what they do and how they operate, political science is the major for you. Pursuing a major in political science offers you an opportunity to increase your understanding of the government, and its functions. It will also enable you to develop an important set of life and occupational skills. Studying political science will strengthen your research, writing, and speaking abilities. You will leave UW-Oshkosh with strong communication and analytical skills that form the foundation for successful employment in any field, even those without direct application to political science.
There are many careers for which a training in political science is most useful. Potential careers for those holding an undergraduate degree in political science include the following: All aspects of the legal profession, federal, state and local government, international affairs, international trade, environmental activism, journalism, lobbying for any company, professional organization, or interest group, and professional campaign work. In addition, a rigorous training in political science is an invaluable background to any other job that is involved in public affairs.
High School Preparation
While in high school, you are expected to become interested in the analysis of social, economic and political issues faced by your community, state and nation. You should also make solid efforts to develop and gain skills in the application of basic mathematics and to gain experience in computer technology. It is vital for you to strive to upgrade your ability in English, particularly the written form.
