Study Abroad

The department is again offering a study abroad option during the summer.  Dr. Siemers will be teaching PS 372 British Political Thought and Politics during the three weeks starting on May 29th and winding up June 19th.  The entire three weeks will be spent on location in Great Britain, with the majority of time split between London, one of the most important and exciting cities in the world, and Dalkeith, a charming town close to the bustling Scottish city of Edinburgh.  Participants in this program during Summer 2008 found it to be a highlight of their college experience and we hope you will consider study abroad, either now or in the future.

In British Political Thought and Politics we will learn about British politics as you can only do on location.  We will attend debate in the House of Commons, meet with a Member of Parliament, and visit historically important sites like the Tower of London, which was the English royal compound for centuries.  Some of the greatest museums in the world will serve as our roving classrooms.  See the Parthenon’s marble friezes in the British Museumand ponder the controversy that has the British and Greek governments at odds over them.  Consider the importance of the Magna Charta, the precursor of all written constitutions, an original copy of which is in the British Library.  Find the Roman army tent in the Scottish National Museum indicating that Britain has been a crossroads of cultures for millenia.

You will learn a great deal about British politics and the British ideas in this course, but just as importantly you will be exposed to British culture and public opinion in a way you could not do here in Oshkosh.  We are also scheduled to see Stonehenge, Oxford University, a Shakespeare play at the reconstructed Globe Theater, Edinburgh Castle, and Blenheim Palace, Winston Churchill’s family home.  Our accommodations in Dalkeith are special too:  the thousand acre estate and palace of the Duke of Buccleuch where several British monarchs have stayed.

We don’t yet know the price of the trip, but are working on figuring the price along with a final itinerary.  If you are interested in the program or want more information call Dr. Siemers at 424-0435 or email him at:  siemers@uwosh.edu.
