What do you get when you combine state-of-the-art facilities, a professional and experienced staff, a track record of success, a top-notch athletic program, the bustling Fox Valley region of Wisconsin, and personalized attention? You get the Oshkosh Difference. The University of Wisconsin Oshkosh features one of the premier Athletic Training Education Programs in the Midwest. The program is accredited by the CAATE (Commission on Accreditation of Athletic Training Education), one of ten in Wisconsin and 345 nationally.
Both your mind and body will be challenged as you embark on a rigorous program of study designed to prepare you for a lifelong career in the “IT” allied health profession of athletic training.
Athletic Training is an AMA (American Medical Association) recognized Allied Health profession that emphasizes the delivery of health care to physically active and athletic populations. Athletic Trainers are the highly educated and skilled professionals that deliver those services. The athletic trainer functions as an integral member of the sports medicine team in secondary schools, colleges, universities, professional sports, clinics, industries, and other health care settings. The athletic trainer works under the direction of a licensed physician and is responsible for prevention, recognition, management, and rehabilitation of physical activity/athletic injuries. He/she functions in cooperation with medical personnel, athletic personnel, individuals engaged in physical activity, parents, and guardians in the development and coordination of efficient and responsive athletic health care delivery systems.
Human Anatomy and how it functions in motion is the foundation for all you do. At Oshkosh, we provide you, the student, with the necessary expertise to understand how the body works and, more importantly, how it heals when injury strikes. You’ll learn both the science and the art of athletic training. The “science” includes courses such as Human Anatomy, Human Physiology, Exercise Physiology, Biomechanics, Pathophysiology, Pharmacology, Injury Evaluation, Therapeutic Modalities, and Therapeutic Exercise.
Once you understand the science you’ll be able to apply the art. The art of athletic training will necessitate the use of your ever-growing critical thinking skills and ability to connect with people. You will work hand-in-hand with our licensed and certified athletic trainers to devise solutions and facilitate treatments for over 500 hundred athletes in twenty sports in the comfort of top-notch and well-equipped facilities. In addition, we can connect you with over two-dozen more athletic trainers as well as numerous allied health and medical professionals throughout the Fox Valley to gain even more experience.
Our student-instructor ratios are kept small. The reason is simple. The reason is YOU. At Oshkosh, we provide you, the individual, with the necessary training and experience you’ll need. At Oshkosh, you won’t be a spectator; you’ll be an active participant. You will evaluate injuries, you will initiate treatments, you will create rehabilitation programs, you will be a part of the team….all under the watchful eyes of an experienced and caring staff. If you want to work in conjunction with passionate health care providers and become the very best the opportunity awaits you.
After you graduate you’ll be ready to take on the world as an entry-level athletic trainer or move onto graduate or professional studies in a multitude of disciplines. You may elect to enter graduate programs like Exercise Physiology, Biomechanics, and Athletic Training or you may decide medical school, physician assistant studies, or physical therapy is more to your liking.
Who are we looking for? We want you….the student with passion, the student with purpose, the desire to make a difference, and the desire to be the very best. If you believe you are that person and you want to be more than a number then don’t delay, apply today. We’re waiting to hear from you! Come experience the Oshkosh Difference. Prepare your active mind to care for agile bodies.
