Students interested in the Athletic Training Education Program at the University of Wisconsin Oshkosh will spend their initial year of study in the "Pre-Professional" phase of the program. They will take a few selected courses and fulfill other admissions requirements while they also complete some of their general education requirements. According to University policy, students may declare majors at any time. However, students will not be admitted directly into the Athletic Training Education Program following high school, switching majors, or transfer from another university. Therefore, they will not be allowed into upper level coursework before being admitted to the program. During the second semester of the Pre-professional Year, students may apply for the "Professional" phase of the program. Once a student is admitted to the program a minimum of three years of classroom study and clinical experiences are required to complete the requirements and become eligible for the BOC, Inc. (Board of Certification) certification exam.
Completion of the Pre-Professional requirements does not guarantee admission to the Athletic Training Education Program. The program is selective and only students meeting the criteria and displaying characteristics representative of a high likelihood of professional success will be chosen. It is possible that the number of students who meet the criteria will exceed the available number of slots in a given year. The number of accepted applicants will vary from year to year and will be based on the number of returning students and clinical instructors in the program. The goal is to admit 12-14 students per year. All students will be notified of their status via US Mail in late May or early June of the year they apply for admission. An individual may re-enter the process and apply to enter the following year's class should he/she be denied admission on his/her first attempt. Completion of the program leads to a Bachelor of Science degree with a major in Athletic Training. The program is housed in the College of Letters and Science.
