Academic and Clinical Program

Program Goals and Objectives

The Athletic Training Education Program has six central purposes.

  1. The program seeks to provide an effective and interactive learning environment for students wishing to pursue a career in athletic training.
  2. The program seeks to develop the critical thinking, decision making, and communication skills necessary for success in athletic training, allied health care, and a broader spectrum of professions in today’s society.
  3. The program desires to expose students to hands-on experiences, clinical settings, and professionals representing a wide range of allied and medical health care professions.
  4. The program works to provide a foundation for success predicated on both a didactic and clinical knowledge base.
  5. The faculty, clinical athletic trainers, and student athletic trainers strive to create an environment consistent with quality health care for the 22 sport intercollegiate athletic program.
  6. The multitude of experiences are designed to provide students with an appreciation for the physical, psychological, and emotional demands on physically active individuals and those that play a role in their success at all levels of participation and competition.

Specific Program Goals

  1. The program will meet CAATE requirements.
  2. The program will utilize contemporary educational media.
  3. The program will utilize technology regularly in the clinical and educational settings.
  4. Program graduates will exceed the national average for successful completion of the BOC, Inc. (Board of Certification) certification examination.
  5. Program graduates will attain state licensure and/or other appropriate designation(s) by the regulatory agencies of states in which they are employed.
  6. All program graduates will attain initial placement in graduate school, a professional school, or entry-level employment within six months of completing their degree program.
  7. Eighty-percent of students admitted to the Professional phase of the program will complete the program.
  8. Students will observe and participate in student-athlete/patient care in clinical settings representing a variety of career tracks in athletic training during their six semesters in the Professional phase of the program.
  9. Students will receive clinical instruction by professionals representing other medical and allied health disciplines (MD, PT, OT, PA, etc.).
  10. Students will accrue educational experiences external to the stated program requirements.
