Reading Materials John R. Burr and Milton Goldinger, Philosophy and Contemporary Issues, Ninth edition (New York: Macmillan Publishing Company, 2004). Course Description The course is an introduction to philosophical topics and analysis. We will study some of the traditional philosophical topics: determinism v. freedom of the will, the existence of God, the mind-body controversy, and the philosophical foundations of ethics and politics. To emphasize the relevance of philosophy, we will study, along with readings in which matters are considered in the abstract, articles in which philosophical thinking is brought to bear on practical questions or problems. For example, in connection with the mind-body controversy, we will ask whether the soul is immortal, and whether computers are capable of thinking. Tests and quizzes 18 unannounced quizzes, each containing 10 True/False questions (max=10 points), on assigned readings. The quizzes are designed to motivate you to read and explore the articles. To be eligible to take a quiz, a student has to be present when the quiz is handed out in class. Each quiz will focus on one article. A quiz may contain questions about the meaning of words that appear in the article, e.g., impudent. Except in case of university-endorsed activities, there will be no make ups. For the purpose of calculating a student's final grade, the best 15 quiz scores only will be taken into account. We will have three tests and a comprehensive final, each with about 60 multiple-choice questions. The third test and the final will both take place during the last week of classes. Relative weights (and dates) are as follows. Quizzes 15% Test I 15% W, Oct. 5 Test II 20% F, Nov. 11 Test III 20% W, Dec. 14 Final 30% F, Dec. 16 If at least five students get a final numerical score above 95.0, letter grades will be assigned as follows: 100-95.0=A; 94.9-91.0=A-; 90.9-87.0=B+; 86.9-83.0=B; 82.9-79.0=B-; 78.9-75.0=C+; 74.9-71.0=C; 70.9-67.0=C-; 66.9-63.0=D+; 62.9-60.0=D; 59.9 or lower=F. Otherwise, the entire scale will be adjusted to secure five straight As. Attendance Policy If you choose to attend, you have to be in class on time. Except for an emergency, a student may not leave the classroom while class is in session. Hats, food or drink and bathroom visits when class is in session are not allowed. Email Policy There is no need to notify me by email of an expected absence or reasons for absence (medical, family, etc.) You cant ask for information in lieu of attending class. I respond to emails during my office hours on a first come, first served basis. Reading Schedule Unless a change in the reading schedule is announced, we will go through the list in its current order. This means that once an article is discussed in class, the next article on the schedule has been assigned. All page numbers refer to the course textbook (Burr & Goldinger). Readings may be added to the list or dropped from it, as needed. Freedom or Determinism 1. Introduction, pp. 30-32 2. Blatchford, The Delusion of Free Will, pp. 40-47 3.
