Abstract

This study summarizes four years of action research in which the author examined pedagogy as it applied to teaching ethnic and non-Western musics. It will be most helpful to people who are teaching or wish to teach such music, but whose formal educational background focused on Western music. The study examines issues impacting preparation for the educator and issues involving student motivation. Among the topics discussed are the following: the role of the textbook, the role of listening anthologies, the importance of continuing education, the importance of receiving student feedback. There is also a section discussing strategies for gaining and maintaining student interest.
