Music Education

(Kenneth Liske)

Teaching music is a rewarding career in a field with high demand. Nationwide teacher shortages mean that good jobs are available, and the importance of the arts in education is better recognized today than ever before.

Numerous UW Oshkosh music education graduates hold distinguished professional leadership roles as influential artist-educators. They direct successful and creative music programs in public and private schools across Wisconsin and throughout the nation. Our graduates are recognized as caring intellectuals—teachers of quality and concern.

A strong curriculum prepares music education majors with teaching skills and professional preparedness, musicianship and general education, within the framework of a quality liberal arts education. The five-year degree program offers graduate study options in education.

Graduates are licensed by the Wisconsin Department of Public Instruction to teach in grades pre-K through 12. Three licensure emphases are available, depending upon the applied study area:

Students are encouraged to pursue more than one license emphasis, and great attention is paid to the education of the whole student as an artist-educator.

Developing of performance skills is achieved through applied lessons and ensemble experiences. Foundation courses in music and general education form the degree’s core. Specialization in the profession is achieved through music education courses, field experiences and professional education coursework in the College of Education and Human Services.

Movement into the profession of music education is further facilitated byparticipation in state and national activities through the collegiatechapter of MENC: the National Association for Music Education (CMENC).
