BIOGRAPHY LIEUTENANT COLONEL DARREL S. TACKETT PROFESSOR OF MILITARY SCIENCE LTC Darrel S. Tackett was born in Rochester, New York and later moved to and was raised in Jenkins, Kentucky. He holds both a Bachelor's Degree from the United States Military Academy at West Point and a Masters Degree from Long Island University. He was commissioned as a Second Lieutenant in the Armor Branch in 1990. LTC Tackett’s assignments include an initial tour with Alpha Company, 3rd Battalion (Airborne) 73rd Armor Regiment where he served as a tank platoon leader, headquarters company executive officer, and support platoon leader. During this assignment, he deployed to Florida in support of the Hurricane Andrew humanitarian relief effort, and to the Joint Readiness Training Center at Fort Chaffee, Arkansas. Upon completion of the Armor Officers Advanced Course at Fort Knox, Kentucky, he was assigned to Fort Lewis, Washington where he served as the I Corps Assistant Headquarters Commandant. Still at Fort Lewis, LTC Tackett served next as the Battalion Maintenance Officer for 1st Battalion (Mechanized), 23rd Infantry Regiment, followed by assignment as the Battalion Maintenance Officer for 1st Battalion, 33rd Armor Regiment. He went on to command an M1A1 Abrams tank company - Alpha Company, 1st Battalion, 33rd Armor Regiment for nearly two years. While at Fort Lewis, he deployed with his unit and individually to the National Training Center at Fort Irwin, California and to Japan and Korea multiple times for various exercises. LTC Tackett was then selected to serve as a Tactical Officer at West Point, and earned his Master’s Degree in Counseling and Leader Development. Afterwards, he served for three years as a Company and Battalion Tactical Officer and a Regimental Executive Officer responsible for developing United States Military Academy cadets into lieutenants. Next, LTC Tackett moved to Fort Hood, Texas where he served as the III Corps Assistant G3. While serving in that position, he deployed to Camp Victory, Iraq and continued to serve in the Future Operations tactical planning cell as an Assistant C3 in Multi-National Forces Iraq. Upon return to Fort Hood, LTC Tackett served as the battalion executive officer for 1st Battalion, 67th Armor Regiment. Later, he served as the Second Brigade, 4th Infantry Division Rear Commander during its deployment to Iraq. He was then assigned as the Second Brigade, 4th Infantry Division, Operations Officer; subsequently, LTC Tackett was selected to serve as the Professor of Military Science for the University of Wisconsin-Oshkosh in Oshkosh, Wisconsin. LTC Tackett's military schooling includes the Armor Officer Basic Course, Airborne and Jumpmaster schools, CAS3, the Armor Officer Advanced Course, and the U.S. Army Command and General Staff College. Some of his military awards and decorations include: the Meritorious Service Medal with three oak leaf clusters, the Army Commendation Medal, the Joint Army Achievement Medal, the Army Achievement Medal with four oak leaf clusters, the Global War on Terrorism Expeditionary Medal, the Global War on Terrorism Service Medal, the Korean Defense Service Medal, the Humanitarian Service Ribbon, the Airborne Badge and The Honorable Order of Saint George. LTC Tackett is married to his wife Carmen, of Fayetteville, North Carolina and has three children: Michael, Logan, and Mariah. |
