Textbook

Calculus Concepts and Contexts, 3rd edition, by James Stewart. You may find the corresponding study guide quite useful, too. The textbook will also be used for Calculus II (67-172) and Calculus III (67-273).

Prerequisites

68-108, or 67-104 and 67-106 (with a grade of “C” or above) or four year college preparatory mathematics and a satisfactory score on a placement examination.

About the course

We will cover sections 1.1--1.3, 1.5--1.7, 2.1--2.9, 3.1--3.8, 4.1—4.3, 4.5—4.9. If time permits, we will cover sections 5.1-5.2.

Technology Calculator

The TI-83 plus (preferred), TI-84, TI-86, or TI-85 Graphing Programming Calculator is required. TI-89 and TI-92 will not be allowed on exams and quizzes.

Homework

Homework will be assigned regularly. But will not be collected. 80% of the problems on the quizzes, exams and final are very similar to the homework problems.

Grading

There will be four one-hour exams, the final exam, ten quizzes, and in-class projects.

The final exam is comprehensive. There will be NO make-ups for the in-class projects, exams, and quizzes under ANY circumstances. In-class projects, exams, and quizzes cannot be taken earlier than the class time.

Attendance

You will be expected to attend to classes regularly. It will compose 3% of your grade. You will allow 2 absences without penalty. For each subsequent absence, you will lose one-quarter of a percentage point from your attendance grade. Arriving late to class or leaving early counts as one-half of a miss.

Grading policy

Eight quizzes, three exams, the final exam, projects, and attendance count. If you take more than eight quizzes, those lowest scores will be dropped. Similarly, the lowest exam score will be dropped out of the first four exam scores. Your grade is determined by the following:

Attendance
3%
Projects 10%
8 Quizzes 17%
3 Exams (17% each)
Final 19%

The final grade will be given as follows.

A: 90+

AB: 87—89

B:80—86

BC:77-79

C:70—76

D:60—69

F:--59
