Applied Calculus, by Hughes-Hallet

Also required; TI 83 (or equivalent) graphing calculator

Workbook: Applications of Calculus with MS Excel by Kenneth L. Price.

Course Outline

The chapters in the text will be taken in the order presented. Coverage will be approximately two sections per day. Try to read ahead as you will be better able to assimilate the ideas presented in class.

Homework will be assigned on a daily basis., but probably not collected, with the exception of spreadsheet assignments, which will always be collected.

Your grade for the course will be based on homework and (possibly) groupwork (20%) exams (60%) and quizzes (20%)

Notes:

Quizzes

There will be a quiz most Thursdays at the end of class (except for the weeks with exams.) Of the total number of quizzes, your lowest score will be dropped. The remaining quizzes will be averaged, for a total of 20% of your grade. There will be no makeups for missed quizzes.

Exams

There will be three exams, each counting for 20% of your grade. The exams will be on Thursday Mar. 2, Tuesday April 4, and Tuesday May 9. If you have conflicts with any of these times, please notify the instructor as soon as possible. Exams will be closed book. The third exam will be cumulative. Exams will be closed book but you may use one page of notes during the exams.

Excel Spreadsheet projects

The class will regularly complete Excel spreadsheet projects from the book by Dr. Price. These may be done individually or as a group. If done as a group, one copy should be turned in with all group members’ names on it. A group member must be present at the time of the assignment to receive credit for the work. Questions from the book must be answered completely and in full sentences.
