Course Materials: Elementary and Intermediate Algebra for College Students
Second Edition by Allen R. Angel (This text is also used for Math 103.)
- Graphing calculator TI-83+ or a similar model
- Graph paper, straight edge, folder, and homework notebook or binder
Objectives:
- To cover basic concepts about numbers, operations of arithmetic, and algebraic expressions
- To introduce students to linear equations, functions, and factoring
- To develop students’ ability to solve logical problems using basic algebra
- To use mathematical problem solving tools to solve word problems
- To not only perform algebraic procedures, but know when to use them and why they work
Evaluation:
Exams (Each exam counts 25% of your final grade.)--The exams are scheduled from
4:30-6:00 in S. Halsey Room 107 on the following dates:
Exam 1 is Wednesday, March 1 covering Chapters 1 and 2
Exam 2 is Wednesday, April 12 covering Chapters 3 (Sec 1-3), 4 and 5
Exam 3 is Wednesday, May 10 covering Chapters 3 (Sec 4-5), 6 and 7
Quizzes (25% of your final grade)—A combination of “in class” and “take home” quizzes will be given throughout the semester. There are no make-ups on quizzes. Your 2 lowest “in class” quiz scores and your one lowest “take home” quiz score will be dropped.
Pretest/Posttest—A short test will be given during week 1 and week 11 of the semester. Your posttest score will count the equivalent of an in class quiz grade.
Grading % Scale: 90-100=A, 82-89=AB, 74-81=B, 66-73=BC, 58-65=C, 50-57=D, 0-49=F
Additional Information:
- Exercise Sets will be assigned as homework and discussed in class. Doing and understanding the homework is important to prepare for quizzes and exams. As a general guideline, study time should be at least double the time spent in class.
- Students who will be absent on the day an exam is scheduled because of participation in a university-approved activity must make arrangements to take the exam early.
- Tutors are available free of charge in Swart Rm. 113.
- Written solutions must clearly show problem-solving steps in a logical sequence with clearly labeled graphs if necessary.
- Course instructors work to give students the best chance to succeed. They are here to guide and direct your efforts. Your best chance of success is to work cooperatively with them. If you have problems you cannot resolve with your instructor, you are encouraged to meet with the course coordinator, Dr. K.L.D. Gunawardena in Swart 205.
