EXAMS

There will be four examinations tentatively scheduled on:

EXAM TOPICS DATE
Exam 1 Chapters 1,2 February 17, 2006
Exam 2 Chapter 3 March 6, 2006
Exam 3 Chapters 4,5 April 5, 2006
Exam 4 Chapters 6,7,8 May 12, 2006

Each student is expected to attend classes regularly and make-up tests will not be given except when the student has a valid reason for the absence.

PRE & POST TESTS

There will be a pre-test on February 1 and a post-test on April 17. These tests are for assessment purposes. The tests are required and for each test missed the student's highest quiz score will be dropped.

QUIZZES

There will be quizzes throughout the semester. There will be NO make-ups on quizzes.

HOMEWORK

Problems from the text will be assigned each day. While the solutions to assigned problems will not normally be collected, you should do the problems in order to learn the proper application of the techniques and concepts covered in the text.

COURSE DESCRIPTION

The first course in mathematics for business students is divided into five parts: Functions, Mathematics of Finance, Systems of Linear Equations and Matrices, Linear Programming, Probability and Statistics. The course will cover most of the material in Chapters 1-8 of the text.

Functions

The objective of this part of the course is to present the idea of a function and its uses.

Mathematics of Finance

The objective of this portion of the course is to present an introduction to the mathematics involved in such financial matters as simple and compound interest, annuities, sinking funds, present value, and the amortization problem as applied to mortgages and installment buying.

Systems of Linear Equations and Matrices

The objective here is to learn various ways of solving systems of equations: by graphing, by substitution, and by elimination method. This includes the special cases where the systems may have infinitely many solutions or where the number of variables may not be the same as the number of equations. The use of matrices, including the inverse is studied.

Linear Programming

The objective here is to teach the basic concepts of solving certain linear programming problems; that is, to find the solution which maximizes or minimizes an objective function subject to the constraints of a system of inequalities. The geometric approach to solving a linear programming problem will be studied.

Probability and Statistics

The objective of this unit is to familiarize business students with the basic concepts of probability and statistics
