Prerequisites: Introduction to College Algebra (67-103) with a grade of “C” or above or replacement.

Textbook: College Algebra : Graphs and Models, by Barnettr, Zieglerr and Byleen. You may find the corresponding solution manual quite useful, too.

Course coverage: We will cover Chapters 1 through 4.

Course Objective: You are expected to have strong algebra skills, and deep understanding about functions.

Technology Calculator: I will be using TI-83 plus in the instruction. If you have a different brand of calculator, it might be OK. However, I may not be able to help you much with a different calculator.

Homework: Homework will be assigned regularly. But will not be collected. 80% of the questions on the quizzes, Exams and final are very similar to the homework problems.

Tutoring: Available in the Tutor Lab, Math Department, Room S113.

Attendance: You will be expected to attend to classes regularly. It will compose 3% of your grade. You will allow two absences without penalty. For each subsequent absence, you will lose one-quarter of a percentage point from your attendance grade. Arriving late to classes or leaving early counts as one-half of a miss.

Grading policy: There will be five exams including the final exam, ten quizzes, and in-class projects. The final exam is comprehensive. There will be NO make-ups for the exams, and quizzes under ANY circumstances. Eight quizzes, three exams, final exam, in-class projects, and attendance count. If you take more than eight quizzes, those lowest score(s) after the top eight would be dropped. Similarly, the lowest exam score will be dropped out of the first four exam scores. In summary, your grade is determined by the following.

Attendance: 3% Projects: 7%
8 Quizzes: 18% 4 Exams: 54%(18% each)
Final: 18%

The final grade will be given as follows.

A: 90+ B:80—86 C:70—76 F:--59
