Fall Semester 2006
Sections 001, 002, 003 MTuWF

Instructor: C. Reigel
Office: Swart 233
Phone: 424-7347 , e-mail: reigel<at>uwosh.edu (usually the best way to reach me)
Office Hours: 1:50-3 PM MW, 11:30-12:30 T, and by appointment.

Required Materials

Text: Applied Calculus by Hughes-Hallet, Gleason, Lock, Flath et al., Wiley, Third Edition, 2006

Calculator: The TI-83+ graphics calculator by Texas Instruments. If you have some other TI
graphing calculator you may use it- but I will use the TI-83+ in class (for this reason some students find it difficult to use a calculator other than the TI-83+). The TI-89 and
TI-92 may not be used on quizzes and exams.

Homework

Homework will be assigned during each class period. It may happen that, at the beginning of the following class session, you will be quizzed on one or more of these assigned exercises. Be prepared! Note also that many exam questions will come from assigned homework problems.

Exams

There will be 3 one-hour (100 point) exams and a comprehensive (150 point) final exam. Make-up exams will be given only for university excused absences (you must tell me in advance if you will be unable to take an exam at the scheduled time). Your lowest exam score (of the first 3) will be dropped. Exams 1-3 will be given in the testing center, the final exam will be given in a large lecture room.

Exam #1 Monday, October 2
Exam #2 Monday, November 6
Exam #3 Friday, December 1
Final Exam Wednesday, December 13 (6-9pm)

Quizzes

As mentioned above, numerous quizzes will be given. Quiz content is generally “easy” if you are current with class participation and homework. There is no makeup for missed quizzes (and none are dropped).

Course Outline

The following topics will be covered:

Chapter 1 Functions and Change
Chapter 2 Rate of Change: The Derivative
Chapter 3 Shot-Cuts to Differentiation
Chapter 4 Using the Derivative
Chapter 5 Accumulated Change: The Definite Integral
Chapter 6 Using the Definite Integral
Chapter 7 Antiderivatives
Chapter 9 Functions of several Variables

Grading Scale: ( percent scores based on your total of quiz and exam points scored)

A 91-100
AB 89-90
B 81-88
BC 79-80
C 68-78
D 55-67
F 54 and below

Attendance

I will not keep a record of attendance. However, as mentioned above, missing class on a quiz day (which may be unannounced) , creates a zero which cannot be made up. The surest way to succeed in this class is to work hard and attend each session. The surest way to fail this class is to miss class.
