Polk Library is continually accepting applications for student employment. See below for descriptions of the positions available throughout the library. Wages start at $7.50-$7.90 an hour, and special consideration is given to students with work study awards.
The employment application is now online. You may either print out the application, fill it in, and mail or return it in person to the library office; or you may submit your application via email as an attachment. **NOTE: To submit your application via email, you must have Adobe Reader version 7.0 or higher on your computer. The campus computer labs currently use Adobe 6.0 - you must print if using those computers.**
Brief Position Descriptions for the Various Areas
Archives
Students in the archives department help organize, catalog and provide reference service to original, historical records. Most of the work is independent, however strong people and research skills are required to help provide access to the materials. Shifts are Monday-Friday 9-12 or 1-4, and Tuesday evenings from 6-10.
Circulation Desk & Stacks
-Library aide student positions at the Circulation Desk require: quality customer service skills, checking in and out materials, giving directions and explaining where items can be found. Punctuality, reliability and a willingness to help are expected. This is a "service-related" position. Audio visual equipment and basic computer operation knowledge is helpful.
-Working behind the scenes in Stacks involves attention to detail. Students will be responsible for putting items back in accurate order on the shelves. Students should be able to work independently. Limited weekend hours are available
-Work shifts are scheduled between 7:30 AM - 12 Midnight as well as some weekend hours. A typical shift is 2-4 hours. --Work schedules accommodate the students' class and activity schedules.
Educational Media Center (EMC)
Primary duties include shelving books and other EMC materials, assisting library users, and completing special projects as assigned. Other duties may include filling out book order slips, cleaning EMC shelving units, making sure that the shelves are in good order, keeping printer trays filled with paper, and helping with or independently creating displays. Typical shifts are afternoons and early evenings.
Government Information
Students will be responsible for shelving materials including books and maps--15 %; filing and or checking in materials-- 10%; creation of lists using Microsoft Word or Microsoft Excel (will train)-- 15 %; service desk--help students and staff locate materials and/or search government and library web sites (will train)or refer patrons to documents librarian-- 60%. It is desirable that applicants are available to work at least one evening shift between Sunday and Wednesday night.
Interlibrary Loan ( ILL )
Hours : flexible, to be worked between 7:45 a.m. and 4:30 p.m. , M - F, no evenings or weekends. Job duties : computer work in various programs, scanning, copying, faxing, shipping, and collecting material from all over the library to provide to other libraries.
Skills desired : Accuracy, attention to detail, ability to work independently as well as with others.

Library Business Office
Work at the library office involves punctuality and reliability, quality customer service skills, collecting and counting money from public copiers, answering the phone, filing, Excel spreadsheets and Word documents computer work, and general office skills. Shifts vary throughout the weekday. Office hours are 8:00-4:30pm weekdays only.
Reference Desk
Student assistants at the reference desk primarily help answer questions library users have about finding information in the library building and on the library website. They also re-shelve and organize books in the reference collection, troubleshoot computers and printers in the reference area, and assist with some filing and dusting in the area.
Technical Services & Information Resources
General information: Students are frequently cross-trained between the different areas and are also occasionally involved in special projects. All positions require attention to detail and the physical handling of books, boxes of books, etc. These are not public service positions. There are no evening or weekend hours; students will work their hours between 7:45 AM and 4:30 PM , Monday through Friday.
Outline of individual areas:
Periodicals/Bindery : Shelving current periodicals (journals). Opening and stamping mail. Packing, unpacking and processing bindery items.
Acquisitions: Unpacking shipments of books. Reconciling numbers and amounts. Updating computer records.
Cataloging/Processing: Processing new material. Handling the withdrawal of material. Updating computer records. |
