How Do I . . . ?

I Need Help Finding . . .

More Help:

Help Finding . . . Articles

Use a Library Search Tool

Quick Start:

  • Use the top option under Find Articles - Try Academic Search Complete as a starting point! This will likely get you some results quickly. It's a general topic search tool that covers many subjects.

Choosing a Good Search Tool

  • If you need more scholarly or thorough results, move down to the drop-down box labeled Find Articles By Subject. Try looking for a more general subject area that would include the subject you are researching.
    • Example: If your paper is on Hamlet for an English Literature class, you could select the subject English
    • Example: If your papers is on prayer in the schools, you may find articles using search tools in either the Religion or Education sections.
  • When you get to the subject page, the top picks for search tools are at the top under "Best Bets" - try these first. The Full Texticon indicates that the search tool may lead you to full text articles online.
  • If you still don't have any luck, try the search tools in the "You May Also Find These Search Tools Useful" section.
  • If you're still striking out, try some of the search tools in the "Good For Any Subject" section. These are good full text search tools that cover many topics generally.

Get Materials

If the article you find is NOT full text online:

  • Write down the citation information (journal/magazine title, volume number, date, page numbers, title/author of the article).
  • Determine if Polk Library subscribe to or owns the journal or magazine in which the article is found.
  • Journals and magazines are filed in alphabetical order. Newer journal are on the 1st floor South, older issues are 2nd floor South.
  • If Polk Library does NOT own a journal or magazine you need, use Interlibrary Loan (a free service for users affiliated with the University).
