Polk Library Workstations:
Guidelines for Using Public Computing Facilities

Use of Polk Library's computing facilities is a privilege intended for all UW Oshkosh students, faculty, and staff. Library workstations are for library-related reference and research purposes only.

All users are expected to abide by the "University of Wisconsin Oshkosh Statement of Acceptable Use of Computing Resources." Some examples of inappropriate and prohibited use of library computing facilities are:

  • Intentionally creating, displaying, printing, or transmitting information which violates the Sexual Harassment Policy of the university.
  • Using the library computing facilities for purposes that are not library reference or research related. Thus, computers in the Reference Room cannot be used for activities such as, but not limited to, using email, participating in discussion applications such as chat, or playing games.

Polk Library will deny access to sites providing discussion applications (such as chat), email or games as we are made aware of them. Sites are blocked based on function, not content.

Non-university library patrons are allowed to use these facilities for library-related reference and research only. They must abide by the following conditions.

  • Agree to abide by the "University of Wisconsin Oshkosh Statement of Acceptable Use of Computing Resources."
  • Agree not to use library workstations for the inappropriate and prohibited activities listed above.
  • Agree to conform to copyright laws and the University's licensing agreements with commercial vendors of information. The use of some commercially supplied databases is restricted to UW Oshkosh students, faculty, and staff.
  • Agree to limit or discontinue their use of library computing facilities if their use interferes with the use of these resources by UW Oshkosh students, faculty and staff.

A copy of the "University of Wisconsin Oshkosh Statement of Acceptable Use of Computing Resources" is available at the Reference Desk and the University' web pages (http://www.acs.uwosh.edu/documentation/acceptable-use.html).

Questions about these guidelines should be referred to Patrick J. Wilkinson (wilkinso@uwosh.edu), Director, Forrest R. Polk Library.
