News Editorial Emphasis

The journalism program offers an emphasis on news and editorial writing. Students with career aspirations in reporting, magazine writing, and freelance writing should enroll in this emphasis. Journalism majors at UWO are required to take 36 credits of journalism classes to graduate. Among the required courses for the news-editorial emphasis are : news writing, editing, reporting, law of mass communication, history of journalism, and either feature writing or advanced reporting. Students are encouraged to pursue a minor or second major that fits in with their specific career goals. There are several student organizations at UWO that cater to the news-editorial student. The campus chapter of the Society of Professional Journalists offers meetings and projects that allow students to learn from professionals in the field. News- editorial majors also write for the Advance-Titan , the award winning weekly student newspaper at UWO. Graduates from the news-editorial emphasis have found employment in newspapers, magazines, broadcast stations, and government agencies.
