GSA North-Central Section Undergraduate Research Grants
Because of the success of our recent North-Central Section meetings, we are able to offer funding for a number of undergraduate research grants this spring.
These grants offer an opportunity for undergraduates to obtain modest research support of up to $300. The application process is straight-forward. The maximum length of the description of the proposed project is one page, double spaced, including tables and figures.
Undergraduates must be students at a college or university in the North-Central Section of the Geological Society of America and they must be members of the Geological Society of America (or they must have applied for membership by the time of the application).
Applications must be postmarked by May 8, 2009.
Please see the student-grant portion of the North-Central Section website for details:
http://www.geosociety.org/grants/ncgrant.htm --the link to the application for undergraduate student research grants is at the bottom of that page.
Successful applicants must supply a 2 to 3 page report on their project at its completion.

LICENSURE REQUIRED FOR PRACTICE OF GEOLOGY IN WISCONSIN
The State of Wisconsin requires that geologists practicing in the State be licensed. In addition to a holding bachelor degree in geology, a geologist must pass two examinations administered by the State Department of Regulation and Licensing (DRL) and also have five years of professional experience. Completing your geology degree here at UW Oshkosh is your first step. Then, during your last semester before graduation (after you have completed at least 24 credits in geology), you should plan to take the first exam, the "fundamentals examination." Instructions for applying to take this exam can be found on DRL's web site:
http://drl.wi.gov/prof/geol/form.htm.
The deadline to apply for the next Fundamentals examination (October 2, 2009) is August 2, 2009. Information about the examinations can be found on the web site of the National Association of State Boards of Geology (ASBOG) at:
http://www.asbog.org. More detailed information about licensure can be found on the Department of Regulation and Licensing web site (
http://www.drl.state.wi.us/) under "Publications," "Administrative Code and Statute Information for Professions." Specific information about licensing requirements for geologists is provided in sections GHSS 2 through GHSS 4.
