LICENSURE REQUIRED FOR PRACTICE OF GEOLOGY IN WISCONSIN
The State of Wisconsin requires that geologists practicing in the State be licensed. In addition to a holding bachelor degree in geology, a geologist must pass two examinations administered by the State Department of Regulation and Licensing (DRL) and also have five years of professional experience. Completing your geology degree here at UW Oshkosh is your first step. Then, during your last semester before graduation (after you have completed at least 24 credits in geology), you should plan to take the first exam, the "fundamentals examination." Instructions for applying to take this exam can be found on DRL's web site: http://drl.wi.gov/prof/geol/form.htm. The deadline to apply for the next Fundamentals examination (October 2, 2009) is August 2, 2009. Information about the examinations can be found on the web site of the National Association of State Boards of Geology (ASBOG) at: http://www.asbog.org. More detailed information about licensure can be found on the Department of Regulation and Licensing web site (http://www.drl.state.wi.us/) under "Publications," "Administrative Code and Statute Information for Professions." Specific information about licensing requirements for geologists is provided in sections GHSS 2 through GHSS 4.
