IMPORTANT REMINDER -- GEOLOGY MAJORS MUST REGISTER AS SOON AS POSSIBLE!
        
Geology majors:  If your registration date for Fall Semester, 2008 has passed and you have not registered, don't delay another moment.  If your registration date is yet to come, make sure you register as soon as that date arrives.  The University will close classes with small enrollments, and we would hate to lose any course from our Fall Semester, 2008 offerings.

Mine Geologist Position
March 20, 2008
 
Newmont Mining Corporations; Midas operation at the Ken Snyder Underground mine, located near Winnemucca, Nevada is looking for an entry level mine geologist.
 
The position will initially involve daily ore control.  These duties primarily involve daily visits to each underground working and the collection of channel samples.  The position will then progress over two years time to include core logging, geologic mapping, the design and execution of underground drilling programs, and geologic modeling.
 
The successful candidate will be required to work in a physically and mentally challenging underground environment; often working in temperatures in excess of 100 F and 100% humidity.  The daily responsibilities of this position include; the cutting of 3 to 7 channel samples of pervasively silicified rock from each of 5 to 8 active workings and the carrying of these samples up to 600.  You will be required to carry 30 to 50 lbs of rock 600 5 to 8 times per day.
 
This is a physically demanding position and the applicant needs to be prepared to work hard.  In exchange for this hard work the successful candidate will, over two years time, be given an excellent well rounded education in the business of mine geology that will serve you well for your entire career.
 
You will work under the direction of two crusty old mine geologists both with over 30 years in the business.
 
Starting salary will be in excess of $52,000.00 per year, plus benefits.

DEPARTMENT OF GEOLOGY LAB TEACHING ASSISTANTS AND TUTORS

The Geology Department is now accepting applications for positions as Laboratory Teaching Assistants and Tutors for the fall 2008 semester. Everyone who wishes to be a T.A. and/or Tutor must apply, including those who are currently employed.

The requirements for qualification as a T.A./Tutor are:
A) The student must be a major or a minor in the discipline to serve as a proctor in the Department's program.
B) The student must have completed at least 60 university credits with an accumulated GPA of at least 2.80. In addition, the student must have completed at least 15 credits (including core courses where applicable) toward his/her major or minor and must have at least a 3.00 grade point average in the courses offered by the major or minor department.
C) The student must have already completed the course for which he or she will proctor with at least a B grade. Alternatively, the student must have completed a higher level course covering the course material with at least a B grade. D) Student must be able to TA and tutor all introductory geology courses Physical Geology, Evolution of the Earth, and Environmental Geology. This means that as a TA or tutor, the student will be prepared to answer questions or at least to know where to find answers in the text book or lab manual.
