GEOLOGY DEPARTMENT NEWS FOR MAJORS
Volume 18, Number 12
Diamond Hunters Meeting
We will meet Saturday, December 8 in first floor Harrington at 9:00 a.m., entering between 8:45 and 9:00 a.m.
We will continue with Igneous Rocks, and at 11:00 a.m. we break for a Christmas Pizza Party, dessert and refreshments. Then about noon or so, we carpool to Weis Science Museum where we are invited to take a free tour (we demonstrated for them this past Spring and will again this March at their show, so they said 'no' admissions will be charged..pretty nice, eh?) It looks like a fun time for all.....we hope a lot of you in the UW Geology Dept. will join us for an interesting day. Need a ride? We will make sure we all get there....and Happy Holidays.
In friendship,

EPA Summer Internships - For students interested in working this summer in an office affiliated with the Environmental Protection Agency. EPA's National Network for Environmental Management Studies (NNEMS) Fellowship Program ------ Each year, the program offers research projects developed and sponsored by EPA Headquarters in Washington, DC and in EPA's regional offices throughout the U.S. The program is open to both undergraduate and graduate students. Opportunities exist for all levels, from freshmen through Ph.D. students. Recipients of NNEMS fellowships receive a stipend based on the student's level of education and the duration and location of the project. The application deadline is Tuesday, January 22, 2008.
The purposes of the NNEMS program are to:
* provide students with practical research opportunities & experiences in an EPA office or lab;
* increase public awareness of and involvement in environmental issues;
* encourage qualified individuals to pursue environmental careers;
* help defray the costs associated with the pursuit of academic programs related to the field of environmental protection
Although these awards are labeled as fellowships, the appointments might be more accurately described as research internships. In 2008 it is anticipated that approximately 20-30 research projects will be offered in the following categories:
environmental policy, regulation, and law;
environmental management and administration;
environmental science;
public relations and communications;
computer programming and development.

LICENSURE REQUIRED FOR PRACTICE OF GEOLOGY IN WISCONSIN
The State of Wisconsin requires that geologists practicing in the State be licensed. In addition to a holding bachelor degree in geology, a geologist must pass two examinations administered by the State Department of Regulation and Licensing and also have five years of professional experience. Completing your geology degree here at UW Oshkosh is your first step. Then, during your last semester before graduation (after you have completed at least 24 credits in geology), you should plan to take the first exam, the "fundamentals examination." Materials needed to apply to take this exam can be found on the exam provider's web site:
http://www.cps.ca.gov/test_registration/wisc/index.asp. The deadline to apply for this spring's (March 7, 2008) Fundamentals examination is Jan. 7, 2008. More detailed information about licensure and the examinations can be found on the Department of Regulation and Licensing web site (http://www.drl.state.wi.us/) under "Publications," "Administrative Code and Statute Information for Professions." Specific information about licensing requirements for geologists is provided in sections GHSS 2 through GHSS 4.
