The Department of Geography & Urban Planning's staff is its strongest asset. In recent years, the department has successfully recruited faculty from Germany, Ghana, Ivory Coast, Poland, the United Kingdom, and the USA. This diversity is reflected in the many different perspectives that the faculty members bring to their teaching.

Although teaching is their first priority, the faculty is actively engaged in many research endeavors. They have been highly successful in securing research grants from both the UW Oshkosh Faculty Development Program and external sources like the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources and the US National Science Foundation. The department encourages students to participate in faculty research. Through faculty-student collaborative grants, students have been involved in projects ranging from a study of wetlands in the Winnebago Pool Lakes to an analysis of the air cargo industry in Southeast Asia.
