HAJIME NI/Introduction
Konnichiwa! Welcome to Discover Japan WebQuest! When you watch TV, magazine, or things around you, you will find many things which is related to Japan. Look at the street. Is there a car parking in front of your house HONDA? Look at the TV. Is POKEMON, or Dragon Ball on? Look around the house. Is FUTON in your bedroom and TOFU in your fridge? Yes, those are all Japanese. Through this webquest, you and your group member will explore Japan and discuss how similar and how different they are with your culture. Finally, you are going to do group presentation about your findings in class.
KADAI/The Task
As a group, you are going to discover about geography, customs, history, government and language of Japan. Student will play following rolls: geographer, historian, political scientist, linguist, and anthropologist from the United States. Students are expected to work together to get information about Japan, and share your findings with your group, and compare and contrast with your culture. Based on their findings, students are going to create an interesting presentation using power point.
KATEI/The Process
1. With in the group, choose one role above (each has to be at least one role).2. Each researcher will go to the web or other resources which suggested below to
explore Japan for your mission.Geographer — You need to find population, climate, map, capital, name of
islands,information about big cities, transportation, etc. You also need to compare it to America.
Historian — you need to find about Samurai, and Edo period. Is Samurai still exists? What was happening in the U.S. around that period? Was American in Japan?
Anthropologist — You need to research about the life in Japan. Are there any holidays? What is famous in Japan? How is Japanese high school student? Are there any festivals in Japan?
Political Scientist — You need to research about government system in Japan. Compare to American government system. Who is the Prime Minister in Japan? What is the emperor’s roll in Japan?
Linguist — You need to find about the language. How do you say "hello" in Japanese? Do they have alphabet? Find out basic Japanese phrases can be used for traveling.3. With your group, share information and create Power Point presentation with handout of sources where other people can access.
4. Present your findings in the class.
