Individual Academic Counseling
What is Academic Counseling like at the Counseling Center?
Academic functioning is very important to students. Having academic problems can reduce career options, cause frustration, and may lower self-esteem. Counselors at the Counseling Center take a holistic perspective and help students identify the source of academic problems and ways to get back on track. Some topics that may come up in individual academic counseling include:
- Adjustment to college/adulthood
- Anxiety (general, test-taking, performance, etc.)
- Balancing multiple roles
- Being assertive
- Concentration
- Family pressure
- LD/ADHD
- Motivation
- Relationship concerns
- Substance abuse
Your counselor may have you take a few assessments or may have to meet with other campus professionals in the process of identifying the source for academic difficulties.
When should I make an appointment?
It is suggested that you make an appointment as soon as you realize you are having difficulties. The sooner in the semester thatyou begin the process, the more likely thatyou will be able to be successful. In other words, waiting until final exam week may not be very helpful.
What is the Academic Checkup program?
The Academic Checkup program is available as a resource referral for staff/faculty who work with students and are concerned about their students' academic progress. A referral to this program may be a suggestion or a requirement, depending on the departmental policy. If you are a staff/faculty member and want more information, please call the Counseling Center and ask to speak with the Academic Checkup coordinator.
