Did You Know?
One in every Four women during their years in college, will be the victim of:
- Sexual assault
- Dating violence, or
- Stalking
In fact, 13% of women per year are stalked and 30% of dating relationships involve violence.
Statistics such as this shows the necessity for a program such as CARE and MenCARE on university campuses, such as ours.
What is CARE and MenCARE?
CARE and MenCARE is an important and unique organization on the UW-Oshkosh campus. Every year, this organization has educated hundreds of students on issues of Sexual Assault, Dating Violence, Sexual Harassment, and Stalking.
Volunteers show their commitment and awareness for the necessity of this program by volunteering their time for training, preparation, and providing programs and presentations.
The educational outreach efforts focus on helping all students who may find themselves dealing with relationship violence of all kinds.
CARE and MenCARE offers information to assist the:
- Victim
- Significant other
- Friends and roommates who may be affected by the incident and who want to help their friend.
The effects of violence reach far into a student’s life including both social and academic studies. Having students educating students will benefit both the students and the University in accomplishing their common goals of achieving a higher education.
In addition to serving as a campus resource on the topic of relationship violence, CARE offers presentations that are available to all university student groups, classes and community organizations.
The purpose of CARE is to:
- Promote the safety and security of all students
- Decrease occurrence of sexual assault, dating violence, and stalking
- Offer survivors information about campus services that can provide physical, emotional or safety assistance
About Us:
The CARE program was initiated in 1989 after date rape had been a concern at UW-Oshkosh for years. Students, faculty, and staff made a commitment to organize in order to address this issue on campus. CARE was formed as a result of this commitment with the coordination from the Dean of Students office, the Oshkosh Student Association, Women’s Center, University Police Department and the Department of Residence Life.
The Student Co-Directors for CARE 2006-2007 are Heather Martin and Michael Lawrence.
The professional consultant to CARE is Shelly Rutz, MSW, LCSW. They are involved in training and supervising the CARE Director and Volunteers. The Counseling Center has a long-standing commitment to providing caring and confidential services to students who are dealing with painful emotional experiences, including sexual assault.
