Background and Counseling Philosophy:

Mary has been at the Counseling Center since 2007.  Before working in college counseling, Mary worked throughout Upper Michigan and Lower Michigan in community mental health, and as a geriatric medical social worker primarily working with people with Alzheimer’s disease and their caregivers.  Mary started her undergraduate education as a non-traditional student and through this is able to understand the struggle of being a non-traditional student while balancing full-time employment and family obligations. Mary was a first-generation college student and as an undergraduate participated in the McNair Scholars Program and was a TRIO program participant.  In her role as a Clinical Social Worker and Case Manager, Mary strives to create a supportive environment where students can safely talk about their experiences. Each student’s journey is important, and Mary views her role as someone who will listen and help define goals and dreams.   Mary assists students in understanding how their problems and issues impact their lives and then helps the student develop new coping strategies or new ways of thinking.
