Department of Chemistry Assessment Plan
Competence with Instruments and Computers
There are two grids associated with this assessment.
The instructor of a course fills out a grid listing instruments used
that semester, and rates each student.
Later the information is transferred to master grids in the student
portfolios.
The master grid for each student shows course number, semester course
was taken, and rating on each instrument/computer skill.

Assessment Goal #3
Competence with Instruments and Computers
Students should be able to calibrate instruments, use them for the
proper applications, verify results by independent techniques, and
demonstrate the use of instruments to novices.
N Novice; student can only operate by following
explicitly written instructions.
I Intermediate; student can extrapolate from
instructions, improving procedure or output.
A Advanced; student can work without
instructions, devise a new application, repair the equipment, or teach
someone else to use
the instrument properly.
