Information about Exams
MFAT Major Field Assessment Test
A multiple choice exam covering factual and theoretical knowledge of
chemistry,
as well as safety information, was written by members of the
department.
In each category there are questions rated as novice, intermediate, or
advanced.
Students take the exam during the second semester of seminar course,
when
they are close to graduation.
They are given two hours for the exam and are allowed to refer to notes
and
textbooks.

1. Describe the structure and composition of matter.
2. Plan the synthesis and characterization of
inorganic and organic compounds.
3. Apply theoretical and mechanistic principles to
the study of chemical systems employing both qualitative and
quantitative approaches.
4. Use theories of microscopic properties to explain
macroscopic behavior.
5. Explain the role of energy in determining the
structure and reactivity of molecules.
6. List the names of all chemistry majors who took
this exam.
