How Advisors Are Assigned to BIO Department majors:
Due to campuswide adoption of the Total Intake Model of undergraduate advising, BEGINNING IN FALL 2005, to qualify for assignment to a Biology Department Faculty Advisor, a student must have:
a. Declared any BIO or MICRO major;
b. Completed BIO 111;
c. Completed BIO 105;
d. Completed Chem 105.
e. Be in academic good standing with the University.
A student who has not yet completed the above will be assigned an advisor in he Undergraduate Advising Resource Center.
Faculty Advisor assignments are made by the Biology Department’s Program Assistant (Biology Department Office, Halsey 149). Certain Faculty members specialize in certain advising areas, as follows:
· Pre-Vet: McDermott (has DVM as well as PhD)
· Other Pre-Health: Bentivenga, Cooper, Dilkes, Kallas, Kleinheinz, Kostman, Michalski, Vaughan
· Cell/Molec/Prof Emphasis: Holton
· Secondary Education: Wise
· Ecol/Org Biol Emphasis: Adler, Pillsbury, Stelzer
· Micro: Bentivenga, Kallas, Kleinheinz, Sandrin, Shors
Once assigned to a Faculty Advisor, the student remains with that Advisor unless either the student or the Advisor requests a change. Exceptions occur when there is a new faculty hire, a resignation, or a sabbatical. Reassignment in such cases may be made by the Program Assistant without consultation of the Faculty or student(s) affected.
Students should watch the Biology Department bulletin boards scattered around the 1st and 2nd floors of North Halsey for announcements regarding group advising and other special events.
