This is a brief description of a course I taught at Northern Michigan
University during Winter Term, 1999.
Algology- the study of algae.
General ecolgoy or consent of instructor.
Algae are an important group of organisms in nearly any aquatic system. They are the base
of most food chains and the first to respond to environmental stress. Knowing how to
collect, identify, preserve, and assess algal samples are valuable skills for
biomonitoring lakes, streams and wetlands. Algal taxonomy, physiology, ecology, culture
techniques, field collection and experimental approaches will be stressed.
