Welcome to the UW Oshkosh Biology and Microbiology Home Page. As part of the College of Letters and Science, our departmental faculty are committed to providing an outstanding education to our students, advancing science through research and scholarly activity, and providing service to our local and professional communities. Faculty expertise ranges from molecules to global ecology, and virtually every organismal group is represented. We offer undergraduate majors in both biology and microbiology. The department also confers Master's degrees, with students choosing from emphases in either biology or microbiology.
Faculty are actively engaged in research, and both undergraduate and graduate students have the opportunity to pursue research. Our faculty have been recently awarded research grants from large and small granting agencies, including, NIH, NSF, NASA, and the USDA. In fact, since 1996, the department has amassed over $1.6 million in extramural funding, with over $600,000 acquired in the last year. Recent publications co-authored by our faculty have appeared in prestigious scientific journals such as Science, Proceedings of the National Academy of Science, Limnology and Oceanography, Virology, International Journal of Plant Science, Ecology, American Journal of Botany, Quarterly Review of Biology, and many others. Among our strengths are microbiology (of course), systematics and evolutionary biology, ecology, and environmental biology. Our intermediate size allows us to have the breadth of a large department, yet maintain the friendly atmosphere of a smaller institution. Students have access to a variety of research equipment from research-grade light and electron microscopes to advanced equipment for cell culture, chromatography, and molecular biology.
