Facilities - Art Education

Art Education is the second largest area in the Art Department with an annual enrolment of one hundred students. We graduate, at an average, ten art teachers every year.

Art Education is administered by the College of Education, however its faculty and classrooms are located in the Arts and Communications building. Students wishing to become licensed to teach K-12 Art are required to apply for admission to the College of Education and have to submit a portfolio and undergo an interview conducted by the art education faculty before being accepted as art education majors.

Within the Art Education program at the University of Wisconsin Oshkosh, we support an inter-disciplinary and an interactive approach to teaching wherein students have a vested interest in their learning. Students majoring in art education study methodologies for teaching art to K-12 students. Students are all initiated to experiential art teaching during clinicals-a pre-student teaching requirement which affords them an opportunity to observe and (sometimes participate in teaching) with art specialists. Our students are challenged to participate in a variety of activities-exhibitions, conferences, museum/gallery visits, art sales, community art activities, and voluntary art programs that benefit them and the community at large. An art class for disabled adults from the community is offered each semester and helps UWO art education students gain experience teaching exceptional students. The art education department is also closely allied with the Paine Art Museum and Gardens where they write and implement curricula for the Family Discovery Gallery's Saturday activities.

The art education program actively encourages students to be engaged in their professional organization-the Wisconsin Art Education Association and the National Art Education Association-under the auspices of a University-wide student art organization-Students Organized for Art (SOFA). Every year art faculty accompany students for both the state and national art education conferences.

There are two art education classrooms in addition to a resource room with over 200 videos and 3000 slides and other teaching materials. Classroom facilities include an 18x24" Conrad printing press, AV equipment, 5000 watt ceramics kiln, and other amenities similar to those found in K-12 classrooms.
