Who is my advisor?
You will be assigned an general advisor from Dempsey your freshman year. If you know that want to be an art major or are at least seriously considering it, you should tell them right away so you can try to schedule some foundation classes. Once you have declared a major, you will be assigned a faculty member from that specific department to continue working with.
It is strongly recommended to communicate with your advisor on a regular semester basis for assistance in program planning, scheduling classes and meeting degree requirements. This is the student’s responsibility. In order to be fully prepared, you should familiarize yourself with the university’s course catalog, art department requirements, and general degree requirements.
Lab Fees and Ceramics Supplies:
Lab fees are used to purchase materials that will be used by the class during the semester. Buying in bulk allows for discounted prices.
Specific ceramics tools and supplies are located in each class syllabus. In the advanced ceramics classes, additional tools and materials may be needed depending upon the individual student’s goals.
Scholarships:
Many scholarships are available to apply for each semester from the art department. They typically require a written application or portfolio of work. Check with the art office or with your advisor.

Helpful Scheduling Suggestions:
BFA students (studio emphasis and Art Education majors) are expected to take Art 234 Figure Drawing I during the first semester of their sophomore year. Art 242 Computers in the Visual Arts must also be taken prior to graduation. BA and Art minors are not required to take these courses.
Never schedule more than 3 studio classes a semester- you might think you can handle it but the quality of your work will most likely be compromised
Try to take your general education science credits within your first or second year because they are difficult to work into a weekly schedule.
It is recommended that you spread out your General Education courses to prevent an overload of upper-level studio courses during your junior and senior years.
Art Office:
The main art office is on the third floor (room 325) of the Arts & Communications (AC) building. The department chair’s office is also located on the third floor and most individual art faculty offices are on the fifth floor of the AC building.
Storage Lockers:
Each currently enrolled ceramics student receives a locker located in the ceramics studio that is registered with the instructor.
Other AC storage lockers are free but must be registered in the art office. The art lockers are red and are located in the basement of the AC building. You should first select a locker, put a lock on it, and then register the locker in the art office.
Galleries:
The Priebe Art Gallery is located on the main floor of the AC building. A student board under the advisement of the gallery director runs the gallery. There are new exhibitions featuring the work of visiting artists about once a month during the regular semester. Priebe Gallery hours are M-F: 10:30 am - 3:00 pm; M-TH: 7:00 pm - 9:00 pm; Sat. & Sun.: 1:00 - 4:00 pm.
The Priebe Gallery Annex is located on the second floor just above the main gallery. This space is used primarily for student senior shows. Annex hours are: M-TH: 1:00- 4:00 pm.
Access To Studios:
All currently enrolled ceramics students are given the current door code and have 24 hour access to the studio during the semester with exception of when there is another class scheduled.
The AC building is open from 7:00 am to 10:00 pm daily and on the weekends. Some studio classrooms such as S216, S217, the figure drawing studio and painting studios are always open during building hours. Other rooms and facilities may have special hours (check with instructors). Anyone needing to work beyond these hours must obtain a special permit from the art office.
