What should I do if my friend has been raped?
- Be a good listener. Leave out judgement statements, like "Why did you leave the party with him anyway." They are probably already blaming themselves. Don't say "It'll be O.K.," they don't think it will be. Try "I'll stick with you." Ask them what they need from you. Don't make promises you can't keep.
- Remember that what they are telling you is in confidence. If you feel like you can't keep that confidence, tell them what you are going to do and why.
- Remember not to take their choices away from them, they have been violated already.
- Encourage them to explore their options and suggest professional counseling.
- If they choose to take action, offer to go with them.
