March Star Award
Janet Karst

It’s not easy being “mom” to nearly 1,000 kids, but that’s just what Janet Karst is for the residents of Scott Hall.

Like when a student starts walking out the Scott Hall doors without a coat in the middle of winter, and Karst calls out, “Why don’t you have a coat on?”

Or when she picks up a birthday cake from a student’s real mom and delivers it to the student’s room.

“I guess I’m sometimes kind of a mother figure here, but I love it,” Karst said. “Sometimes, students call me from their room to ask what the weather’s like today!”

Karst, who has worked in the office that has served residents and staffs of North and South Scott halls for 19 years, received the March UW-Oshkosh Star Award.

“With her straight-forward, tell-it-as-it-is manner, Janet always has a willing ear to listen to resident, parent and staff concerns, trying to be helpful to all and bring matters to a resolution,” said Carolyn Bauer, who nominated Karst for the award.

She’s an able resource, friend and mentor to students and staff, said North Scott Hall director Thomas Pedersen. When a call came from a parent wondering how she could get a birthday cake to her daughter, Karst told her to send the money and she’d pick up the cake and delivered it to the student.

“Many students come into the office with questions, and Janet is always willing to make a phone call or direct them to the office that can answer their question,” Pederson said.

Karst began working as an LTE at UW-Oshkosh in 1969. Except for time off from 1975 to 1988 to raise two children, she’s been here ever since. She worked for several offices at the main administration building—Dempsey Hall—before taking the Scott Hall job.

“Janet is always willing to stay late, work weekends and help out whenever needed,” said Pederson, adding that her goal is to improve the lives of students.

Many students never forget.

“It’s not surprising to see former students stop by to catch up with Janet,” Pederson said.

Bauer said Scott Hall staff members also appreciate Karst’s work.

“This petite blonde ‘powerhouse’ is not only an efficient, caring worker, her bubbly personality makes her a delight to know,” Bauer said.

The Star Award includes a framed certificate, a reserved parking space for a month and a gift from University Books and More. The award is presented each month to employees who have worked at least six months at UW-Oshkosh.
