Just as a stage manager’s work behind the curtain is essential to the production of a play, media technicians like Gary Vandre keep university classrooms running smoothly.

Vandre’s outstanding, behind-the-scenes work for UW-Oshkosh Media Services has earned him the Star Award for the month of January.

Aiding classroom technology is only part of his job, and Vandre is always looking for opportunities to improve his service.

When audiovisual services assistant Evelyn Meuret found that media equipment in a particular classroom was inoperable, she turned to Vandre, who worked with her to get the classroom ready for the following day.

“Gary proved why the university is lucky to have such a dedicated, knowledgeable technician on board,” Meuret said.

Vandre attributes his successes to his long-time coworker in Media Services.

“When I first got here, Jim Agen was patient and helpful,” he said. “I was just an electronics guy, and I didn’t know anything about audio and visual. It’s a team effort down here. Without him, I couldn’t do what I do.”

Vandre still enjoys coming to work every day after 10 years because of Agen, but also because of those involved in winter and spring commencement ceremonies, where Media Services plays a key role.

“It’s a really joyful experience to see all the kids and to see the looks on their faces when they’ve finally made it,” he said. “I never graduated from a four-year university. It almost brings a tear to my eye to see the joy there.”

Vandre joined Media Services in 1996.

The Star Award includes a framed certificate, a reserved parking space for a month and a gift from University Books and More. The award is presented each month to employees who have worked at least six months at UW-Oshkosh.
