June STAR Award Recipient

Talkington crucial for reading

Debra Talkington’s commitment to her job, and her extensive knowledge, have earned her the June Star Award.

Since coming to UW-Oshkosh in 2002, Talkington has helping the reading education department run like a watch … an expensive watch. Before that, she was in the Department of Community Corrections in Eagle River.

“I was happy and surprised to receive this award,” said Talkington. “It was truly an honor, and I’m grateful for the nomination.”

She guides graduate students through the enrollment process, organizes data about the program, updates and develops online information and developed a functional and comprehensive database for the program. With this system, she produces reports containing accurate and up-to-the-minute information.

“All of the faculty in the reading education department find that Deb is very pleasant, cooperative and easy to work with,” said department chair Joan Simmons.

Talkington has been integral in the National Council for Accreditation of Teacher Education (NCATE) accreditation process for the College of Education and Human Services (COEHS), Simmons said.

“This effort is very much appreciated, not only by the reading education department, but also the college’s NCATE steering committee,” said Simmons. “She is a tireless and knowledgeable worker.”

The Star Award recognizes performance above and beyond expectations. It includes a framed certificate, a reserved parking space for a month and a gift from University Books and More.

The award is presented monthly to classified employees who have worked at least six months at UW-Oshkosh.
