Title of Proposal

Wireless internet within Halsey Science Center

Description of Proposal

The current covererage of wireless internet is either very poor or unavailable in many high traffic areas within the Halsey Science Center. We believe that the installation of four additional wireless access points would greatly increase the availability of wireless internet in Halsey. We used three test systems to assess the current wireless situation in Halsey. Details of our findings can be found on the Computer Science Club's website. (uwosh.edu/cs_club)

Our Suggestions for improving wireless access: We believe there should be a total of four wireless access points on the second floor of Halsey. Having one access point in the middle of the hallway leads to a fuzzy signal in the end classrooms. Having two access points per wing would greatly improve the signal strength available to students. In addition, we would like an access point placed in the basement in between the pit class rooms. A number of students bring their laptops to class for note taking and it would be convenient to be able to check email and do constructive research during class. The last area of Halsey that we believe wireless internet would be useful is the fourth floor of Halsey in the area were there are about three or four classrooms clustered together.

Estimated number of students who would benefit from this Proposal

The Halsey Science Center is a high traffic area for students and faculty and is the home of a number of departments within the College of Letters and Science. During the day the main computer lab is usually close to maximum capacity and the halls are filled with students studying on the floor. Many students use the building as a place to wait between classes and as a study environment. Because of these characteristics, having wireless access throughout the building is an important recourse we believe many students would benefit from. Including the pit classrooms and all of the classes hosted within the four story building we believe it is fair to say that there are at least 3000 students who use Halsey on a daily basis. As a rough estimate, if 5% of students brought there laptop to class or to study within Halsey, then about 150 students would benefit from increased wireless access on a daily basis. Laptops are especially popular within pit classrooms and yet wireless access is very poor or not available.
