Homesickness
New friends, unfamiliar surroundings and increased responsibilities can all contribute to the stress of being in college and cause students to feel anxious. Starting college can also trigger symptoms of mild depression such as feeling sad or experiencing changes in appetite, sleeping patterns, or difficulty concentrating.
Homesickness is universal and few people, from kindergarten students to campers to college students are immune. Feelings of homesickness may vary from person to person. It may occur right away or maybe later in the semester when the regular routine and academic demands of college set in. Some individuals may escape feelings of homesickness altogether.
But if you are feeling homesick, what can you do?
- Understand that it is normal to feel blue, and you are probably not the only one feeling this way.
- Stay in touch with loved ones. Talk to family, friends, or a roommate about your homesickness, which can help normalize your feelings.
- Create a familiar environment by bringing photos, stuffed animals or a favorite quilt from home.
- Do things that help relieve stress: eat right, make time to rest and relax, get regular physical exercise, which can help enhance your mood. Watch your alcohol consumption as it is a depressant and may make you feel even sadder.
- Get involved in campus life and learn about the Oshkosh community activities as well.
- Set small attainable goals and try to remain flexible.
If you find that your sadness and anxiety don’t gradually subside but instead worsen to the point where they’re interfering with your ability to study, attend class, or socialize with friends, you might benefit from a visit to the Counseling Center.
