How to Get Your Student to Get Counseling

It is recommended that you express your reasons for concern in a straightforward, yet caring, and supportive way. It might be helpful to say something like "I am worried about you. You just don't seem to be yourself lately. Have you thought about going to talk to someone about your concerns? I think it would be really good for you to talk with an objective person who can help you sort out what ever is bothering you. Will you go over to the Counseling Center and make an appointment?" Of course, you will put this into language that fits your style, but the main point is to be direct and matter of fact, but still caring.

Making an Appointment at the Counseling Center

Students may schedule an appointment by calling or stopping by the Counseling Center. Every attempt is made to schedule appointments as soon as possible, usually within a day or two from the time of the request. During times of heavy demand, however, students may have to wait longer, especially if they wish to meet with a particular staff member. If someone is in crisis we will meet their needs as soon as possible.
