11 things men can do to end violence against women

  1. Make a personal commitment to treat women with respect.
  2. Be a positive role model for boys and other men.
  3. Reject traditional stereotypes about men that devalue emotions and "feminine" qualities.
  4. Speak out against sexist comments, jokes and sexual behavior.
  5. Take a Women's Studies course or read a book about women who have experienced violence in order to gain a better understanding of the effects of violence against women.
  6. Communicate your desires clearly and ask your partner to do the same.
  7. Do not make assumptions about what she wants based on how she is dressed or how she is acting.
  8. Start or participate in a discussion group about men's roles in ending violence.
  9. Volunteer at a rape crisis center or domestic violence shelter.
  10. Never pressure a woman to have sex.
