Youth Work Coalition (YWC) Workshop:

Intentional Harmony -Managing Work & Life

Most of us struggle at one time or another with the challenge of managing work and the needs of our personal and family life. We know balance is important, but how do we achieve it? This workshop will examine the need for balance and discuss strategies for managing worklife roles.

Instructors: Karen Dickrell and Chris Kniep are both UW Extension Family Living Educators and are Professors in the Department of Family Development.

Advanced Ethics and Boundaries for Social Workers, Counselors and Mental Health Professionals

 

Date: Friday, September 26, 2008

The goal of this workshop is to exercise and strengthen the participants’ competencies in coping with the practical, ethical challenges that occur in clinical settings.

Participants will:

▪ appreciate the distinction between rule-based and value-based ethics.
▪ have a systematic method to analyze ethical problems.
▪ recognize that ethical predicaments reflect conflict in underlying values.
▪ appreciate the dynamic interaction between personal ethics and institutional ethics.
▪ have an understanding of the psychology behind ethical offenders.
▪ be able to develop a personal strategy to cope with ethical predicaments.
▪ anticipate some of the emerging ethical dilemmas of the future.

Instructor: Hugh Johnston, UW Madison Medical School and Department of Educational Psychology
Time: 8:30 a.m. - 12:30 p.m.
Location: UW Oshkosh River Center, Oshkosh, WI
Fee: $85 includes materials, refreshments and certificate for 4.5 Continuing Educations Hours (CEH).

Hugh Johnston is clinical associate professor in the psychiatry department of the UW Madison medical school and School of Education Psychology. In addition to his teaching and research activities, he has written extensively on the topics of childhood depression, ADHD and obsessive/compulsive disorder. He is co-editor of the Handbook of Depression in Children and Adolescents.

Ethics and Boundaries for Social Workers

Sponsored by: the Northeast Wisconsin Alliance for Social Worker Continuing Education


This workshop meets the Wisconsin Department of Regulations and Licensing Continuing Education Requirements for Social Work Ethics and Professional Boundaries. Participants will review the National Association of Social Work Code of Ethics including social work values and ethical principles. This interactive workshop will use ethical dilemmas and case examples to illustrate the ethical challenges that social work professionals face in their daily practice. Participants will engage in a discussion of what it means to be a professional and gain the ability to set clear boundaries with clients and colleagues.

Instructor: Fredi Staerkel, Ph.D.
Time: 9:00 a.m. - 1:00 p.m.
Location: West Bend, WI
Fee: $85 includes instruction, breakfast, and certificate for 4.5 Continuing Educations Hours (CEH).

Fredi Staerkel, is an assistant professor in the UW Oshkosh Social Work Department and program coordinator for the collaborative master’s in social work program. Staerkel has 26 years of social work experience in direct practice, management and research. Her primary area of practice has been child welfare and family support. She holds a master’s degree in social work and Ph.D. social welfare both from the University of Washington in Seattle.

Continuing Education Requirements: Thirty (30) credit hours are required. Four (4) of the 30 credit hours must be in social work ethics and boundaries.Please note: for the biennium that begins July 1, 2007 and ends February 28, 2009, only 25 continuing education hours are required. Of those, 4 credit hours must be in social work ethics and professional boundaries. Thereafter, 30 credit hours are required. See Wisconsin Statues and Administrative Code for more details.
